i started growing my hair and after watching the incident i tried my lid on and its tight, surely he would need a lid a couple of sizes bigger and when it happened it compressed his afro and made his lid come off.
Are you serious ? At motoGP level they are having everything Taylor made to perfection costing 10 times what we pay for top quality kit
There is some suggestion on forums and other sources that Marcos lid was 2 sizes bigger due to the hair. No idea if true or not . I would be intrested to hear the reports of the reason his lid came off. Strap snap/faulty lid ?
There is bound to be an investigation into that but his helmets would be made to measure and a tight fit . If he shaved his head then yes his lid would probably be to big but with his hair it would already be compressed tight as you like.If it was a problem it would have been seen in his other crashes . I would guess nothing to do with his hair , Strap snap maybe, Seen it happen in motocross loads .
As Arthur said, the force required to 'roll' a helmet forward and off the head, using the chin guard as a fulcrum is considerably less than that required to force it straight up or roll it backwards as the strap and the fulcrum are in the same position. There's also the force multiplication applied by the leverage to the strap's fixing point to consider from this action. As with all these things, an accumulation of glitches conspired together to create a much bigger tragedy.
as brutal as it sounds, his lid came off because his head got run over by a 160kg motorcycle with a 70kg man on it doing 120mph . you cant imagine that force / momentum. the lid is designed to stay on from impact whereby the head is going forward and hitting the tarmac which is exactly how it performed. if you watch the replays imo it appears as though the chin guard area was crushed which resulted in the strap being broken, and the lid coming off. i knew this would come up, and was intenting to stay out of it as i think its irrelevent now and people should just remember what a great guy and racer he was, however i think people have to accept it was just a freak accident that couldnt be forseen or the lids cant feasable be designed for.
I have not seen the crash ,but have noted the mainly intelligent comments regarding this very sad matter. My gut feeling is that it would have been the massive impact, that even a top priced helmet, which is divided by an unsupported piece of plastic visor that was the weak link and not hair .Remember all these guys are worth multi millions and as said in this thread all safety items, including the air bags have been tested and tested, perhaps 18 months prior to general release. If you analize the construction of a helmet (i have not) you have a Shell /Lining /Strap /visor .You can't expect this to do anything but to help out in a normal off situation. RIP.
