Ok I will give you a quick summary of the problem and what has been tried and failed. My blade cuts out only when riding normally from 1-2nd gear about 6-9k revs ,it will not fault on a static test with the rear wheel on a paddock stand. When I say cut out I mean total engine fail revs drop straight to 0(like switching the bike off) but still get power to the speedo .So an electrical fault of some sort. When it stops I switch of the power and back on and it will start up and off I go again to maybe do the fault again or it could be ok for 20 mins.(I only know this as I was testing it on a long stretch of road as you go in to Snetterton (that's another story what happened to me for doing this) Me and Dave V (who is a legend by the way )and Dave the next HAMMERTIME is on me mate. So we removed the Pc5,QS we had the bike running with the tank up seeing if there was a loose plug or wire and couldn't find anything .i have checked tilt sensor ,side stand switch and nothing . Dave spoke to a tech guy at honda he knows and we looked at any fault codes(we did get number 1 injector but after we cleared that we couldn't get it to show a code again)it's a new Ecu so could of been there before ) after it had happened again it wasn't giving any fault codes the tech guy from honda also said on 08/09 blades there was a problem with the cam position sensor(which doesn't give a fault code) so this is my next thing to look at the main problem I have is testing the bike as it's a track bike it's not insured/mot/tax but as I will not go on track again until it's sorted so looks like I will have to insure it etc as I am racing at Cadwell at the end of April and won't risk a repeat of this weekend. I mentioned have replaced the ecu it's nothing to do with that as I put the old one back on with the key/hiss and it still cut out so not this. It's haunting me this problem now so I have 2 choices burn the fecking thing or try and fix it.
Jase - feel for you on this - We are both effectively 'out of pocket' by a similar amount this last week on our Blades, and both of us for reasons we either do not understand or simply make no sense - and neither able to conclude or make any financial recovery. Will happily loan you any parts - but your challenge is being able to test it - it will be a tiny connector which is loose, a split wire 'somewhere' in the loom etc. - but tracing it will be the nightmare. I think your plan to get the bike 'road legal' so you can at least test / trouble shoot is the way forward or it will drive you insane Sorry I cannot help - but as said the offer of loan sensors from my ruined engine is there if needed
Jase I had a cutting out issue on my blade went down all manner of routes of fault finding and it turned out to be a loose positive connector on the battery
So been looking about on google and the CPS seems to show up quite a bit found this Cam position sensor failure... It is common and on the track can be VERY dangerous. I've known people who lost faith in the bike because of this well known and documented issue. Between this and the oil burning, many have sold theirs and moved on. Honda has an updated part and I've known people who would replace them after a few race weekends just as a preventative measure (until they could sell the bike). I just bought several Cam Position Sensors myself as my original went out recently and I'm not very happy about it. I'm expecting to replace it regularly as others have warned me to do so. For the street it probably isn't nearly as much of an issue, but dropping down a few gears as you're throwing it into a corner while surrounded by a few other people, and yeah, it IS an issue... I totally get the loosing faith something you don't need when on track is to be thinking I hope the bike doesn't cut out while I am banked over with someone up your rear end, it happened at oulton park the other week exactly the spot where the rider died last year it was a close one.
Cheers mate it's one of the first things I checked will remove battery see if I can see anything else also think I might replace the whole main loom as mine got damaged and repaired and also checked all seems ok just not convinced and I have 4 weeks til Cadwell and I will be racing hopefully on my blade.
Stick at it jase! Really feel for you mate. Just think how good that first podium will feel after all this hassle. I'm positive you'll have it sorted for cadders
So update on this thanks to Craig aka (shiny side up) I have bypassed the tilt sensor and put numberplate on bike and took for a quick spin up 70mph issh high revs and all seemed ok will mot/tax this week and give it a few hundred miles until I am happy it's fixed. I had a damaged main loom due to it getting caught in the left fan it had cut one wire and damaged 3 other wires well in doing that it damaged the ecu which I replaced ,Craig said to bypass the tilt sensor while doing this I noticed 1 of the wires in to it was one if the wires that got damaged so I am hoping this caused the til sensor to cause me these problems which would make sence As it fried the ecu as well . We will see if not at least its one thing of the could be list .
be carefull not having a tilt sensor though,if you crash and the bike is on iot's side still running, thats a very hefty bill. personnaly,i'd get a new loom from somewhere,as i'm almost certain this is your problem.
Mate I'm with Scooby get a loom and tilt sensor as said if bike runs while you a drift from it hopefully never happens but can be costly bud
Yeah I plan to put tilt sensor back on really a quick fix to see if its cured the problem regarding a new loom also happy to do this especially if it's fixed . Scooby you reckon I would need to remove engine to fit new loom as the bit that goes down the left hand side of the frame that's in the plastic sleeve seems very tight against frame and engine also you want to fit it Alblade is going to Yorkshire Gooner tonight so I have asked him to pick up a tilt sensor he has a loom but not sure whether to put a second hand one on for £50 and trust its ok or buy a new one for god knows how much .
I'd put the second hand 1 from gooner on mate, most of his stuff comes from new bikes anyway. A new 1 from Honda will be £££.
if im honest i cant remeber, and ive had the engine out of a mine a few times!!!!,ask gooner,he'll be able to tell you for sure.go with a 2nd hand loom, just check it over to make sure it doesn't have any splits or rub marks.if you need any help/info on dropping the engine though give me a shout.
Guys when I had told jase to bypass the tilt switch it was for diagnostic purposes to either rule it out or confirm its the cause of his issue! Would rather he only spend money on the parts he needs rather than blindly buying and swapping parts out that may have an issue, that gets costly pretty quick!
Have you ever thought of just trying another tilt switch or has this been mentioned already,Algiers setting in ehh !
Jase, how was the loom repaired? Soldered joints? Just twisted wires? Blue scotch locks? Crimp connections? If your loom is soldered connections and the joints are good you should not require a new loom! Using soldered joints is a factory authorised way of carrying out long term wiring repairs and the only way factories will allow to be used for repairs in order to maintain the factory warranty! Also was the cam sensor issues not more pertinent to older models blades than the 08+? Not saying they can't happen to 08+ bikes but just more folks shouting about 04ish models!
Loom was soldered by a sparky and I got one of the parkitt lads to check the job if any dry joints etc and to check (here goes my spelling consitervity check if that's spelt wright) and all was fine with that .The tilt sensor is the only part that wasn't checked.
If your loom is soldered and the continuity is good down each of the previously damaged wires you shouldnt need to swap out the loom as its doing what its supposed to. Hopefully it's just the tilt unit that's your issue, I haven't opened on of the tilt units up but I think it's full of a think conductive fluid which allows the bike to lean over a certain amount, but if it goes on its side there isn't enuff fluid inside the unit to maintain contact with the connections inside breaking the circuit and the engine then shuts off to limit any possible engine damage from no oil in the sump where the oil pickup tube is!
Going to mot it tommorow so will try and clock some miles up this week hopefully but at least I can road test the trackbike if I need to in the future as it's no fun full turning up to do a trackday /race and you can't get on track . Cheers Craig will let you know, knowing my luck it will be something else but I did win the lottery last night so you never know -£25 the most I have won since it started .
