Will I be pushing it with a 9"x3" plate? It's readable from 21 metres easy....

Yes totally! If it's not at least square then you will get pulled a lot! Mine is a smaller version of the standard and I still get coppers pulling out measuring tape and checking it.

I did have the single line style before on my RR7. It does look good tho ;)

dont bother with a single line plate unless you want a £60 fine every time you get stopped. I know they look good, but not worth the bother.

Up our way they don't take kindly to a single line plate. I run a 7" x 5.5" and haven't had any issues, touch wood !

I saw a bike the other day - think it was a Z1000 with a plate that was fixed almost horizontally. Impossible to read. Whatever tail tidy was fitted to it meant that the number plate was pointing to the sky. To be fair it looked a legal plate other than that (or maybe only slightly smaller)....

ok the so 7" x 5.5" is the way to go?

Obviously I want it small, but the smallest legal size.

I just thought if it was viewable from 20.5 metres then it was ok.

I have seen a lot of single plates around, that's why I was unsure about it.

    many thanks guys

No such thing as 'The Smallest Legal Plate' as nothing outside of the standard 9" x 7" is legal and that is that.

Having said that I've been running a 8" x 6" plate since the bike was new which looks close enough to standard not to attract attention and have been fine so far.

What's an inch between friends eh?

Sinewave, it's the letters that determine legal. For instance, if you have a plate that reads "A1" then it will be legal and tiny. away smaller than a 9x7.

I have S13 CBR and its 7.5 x 6...totally legal as theres less numbers and letters..... (3 on the top, 3 on the bottom compared to usual 4 on the top)

However, my Touring plate is 5x4...

Keep the one line plate for when you go to Europe and nobody will notice or care - I run a legal plate as its one less reason to get a tug in the first place and police really don't like small plates and may use that as a reason to stop you and then check EVERYTHING else

Running an 8x6 on last bike for 2yrs and this bike 3 months, never ever been stopped. Mate who is a traffic cop says he wouldn't bother stopping me, he works on a if I can read it it's ok, the ones with ridiculous fonts, badges slogans etc etc the siz of a packet of cigs, just waiting to get pulled.

I have an 8x6 plate on mine, never had a problem, the law only states that characters must be 64 mil high and 44 mil wide. Single line plates are illegal no matter how big you make the letters. Strictly speaking mine is illegal because the side logo isn't one of the EU approved national identifying flags, but I've never met anyone who gives a f#@k .
