Andy is right, it happened to me when I swapped from Blade to ZX10 http://1000rr.co.uk/lounge/20997.htm
My renewal is due soon and every year I use a comparison site to see how my renewal measures up. Just did a requote this week. 2011 blade few mods but all declared. 43 yrs old, 9 years claim free, clean licence, west Cornwall location. £400 total excess. Fully comp, bennetts are quoting £86. Never had it that low for this bike.
I have been with Bennetts for the last few years now. Last year I paid £142 fully comp, breakdown, helmet and leathers covered. My bike is a 2010 blade (but registered in 2011, and this always confuses the companies) I'm 41 with full no claims, and 3 points for going marginally over 30 MPH I moved house a month before my policy was due to expire and called them. They wanted £32.50 (£2.50 policy change, £30 admin) to change my policy to the new address, which I did. However, they said they would refund the admin charge if I stayed with Bennetts at renewal time. So a month later my renewal landed on my doorstep for the sum of £176 all in same cover. I called them up to complain about the price hike (petty I know, as it is only £34 more. But working in the motor industry makes you want to barter all the time) They kept me on hold for a minute and came straight back with a quote for £129, And would I like to renew with this price? So now was the time for me to play my trump card and remind them of the conversation I had with them a month ago when I moved house. I was put on hold again for ages but they eventually said that I would have to pay the £129 for the policy and that they would send me a cheque for £30 back 2 weeks later a cheque for £30 turned up at my doorstep! So basically I paid £99 fully comp with breakdown and helmet and leathers cover this year!
You're far better off calling them sometimes to find out what the score is, 99% you'll get a better quote
Some companies take the piss if you auto-renew. When I came to renew the car insurance I asked why the insurance had gone up over 10%. They said it was "grouped" and that was the price. I did a quick check online and found another local company would do it for £120 less. Went back to the first lot who said "we'll match that and take off another 10%." Unbelievable!
Well I spoke nicely to the kind man at Bennett and he couldn't believe how much it had gone up either, he spoke to his manager and.... No change, only one company wanted to cover me, something about my bike has change categories, was A group now 7A ??? Whatever that means, said it looked a nice bike because he had just googled it and sorry they can't help. So what would you do ??? Well I went on their quote online site and got a quote, £690, and I put down the 3 points I've just got in my van as well. Going on other sites later. Watch this space.
I've renewed my insurance and paid £265 fully comp with a claim two years ago. I've gone with Swinton cos E Bike doubled in one year.
Holy crap! That is rubbish... and the reason I haven't claimed for my recent run in with a local cat... my insurance is currently £250 fully comp with 6yrs NCB and one non-fault accident under my belt from 2012... before the accident I was on a £150 premium for a 650 ER6N!! I hate insurance companies and because of my non-fault accident I cannot get insured on my BF's Focus ST... so I bought another bike. Almost forgot... I'm with Express Insurance, and their solicitors really helped me in my 2012 accident which ended up narrowly avoiding going to court because the 3rd party insurers refused to pay out for their clients accident!!!
i'm with Bennett's and my quote for this year is £240 but thats legal and a few other fees. Basic cover is £195. But it does say the standard insurance covers 16 of the most common modifications as standard so my exhaust is covered and so on. it's only £240 and was not going to bother looking but have and seems the RAC will cover me for £150. and many other insurance companies will do it for well under £200. So might look about I have 8 years NCB, 37yo, no points or accidents, 4k a year but the only downside is living in bristol
Well I spoke to Bennett's again to day to see if they could improve on the £690 and the answer was no, if I remember from Last year they had a drop down box and it had CBR1000rr Repsol in the list of bikes to choose from, this year it never. Seems they don't like race replicas anymore. If I choose end can and Crash bungs in the modded section, £690. If I choose end can and dynojet PCV, £3461.61. Bargain. Now this is Fact, Repsol + PCV = quickest colour !!!! Lol Faster than red, black, Hrc colours. Insurance companies don't lie. Who needs a Rcv1000rr when I've got my Repsol. Luckily I never ever put a PCV on mine. Now insured with Simply Insurance, £301, can ride abroad but only minimum cover, if I want to have full comp I can pay £25 per week. Perfect.
you have to wonder if companies like these muppets really assess the "risk" with any knowledge of what an end can and PCV actually do to a bike!! louder and smoother is it!
How do you get on with that amount of mods on you bike with insurance ? Asked new company about PCV and if it gives more power it's not allowed, told him it's more for driveability and maybe 2 or 3 bhp but still said no !!!
