Front axle removal

What size hex key do I need to take the front wheel out please.

I don't have one, if you keep the female hex side locked up on the pinch bolts and undo the pinch bolt on the opposite side where the 21mm nut (maybe?) is then loosen with a socket then finally undo the second set of pinch bolts and tap the head of the 21mm until the female hex slides through enough to pull it out.

 

I take it there are no threads on the axle near the hex end.

 

Nope. Also there is no risk of damaging the spindle as when the pinch bolts are loose the shaft should slide with a few gentle taps.

 

like already said you don't need a hex.Its only threaded on the nut side

For the sake of paying less than 8 an half quid why not just invest in the hex tool and be done with it, they do give you the extra length to make use of when trying to pull the axle out and not get covered in grease in the process.
