Just got home, left at 21:00 yesterday, some trip. Totally agree about the rubbish left behind we were watching at Barregarrow a French lad dropped his empty can of Carling and was going to leave it when someone made him pick it up and put it in the bin all of 10 ft away, The rubbish up from the Creg to Kates was terrible. You see them drinking on the Ferry as well knowing full well they'll be back on the bike in a few hours. Agreed, some of the riding was atrocious so many accidents this year the mountain was closed more than open. People wandering about on the closed roads, not seen that before, blokes arguing about not being able to see because they didn't get up early enough and a extra floor on the ferry today everyone being gassed waiting for the lower to deck to unload. The disqualified rider getting 8 years in prison, the 2 separate rtc's at the devils elbow (Kirk Michael to Peel road) and the numerous other accidents, mental. Just going to keep getting busier and busier. All booked for next year, can't wait.
Sorry 8 months. (bit tired) http://www.three.fm/news/isle-of-man-news/tt-fan-jailed-for-driving-whilst-disqualified/ Think the guy who walked on the closed road and mouthed off to the Marshal got 8 weeks.
Whoever told you that was wrong. Where you see the national speed limit sign (same as UK) that's it. But as I said before, if your riding is shite or reckless or dangerous, expect to feel the full force of the law.
A few years back there was a referendum on the speed issue, but it was rejected by a large majority. Manx people like their freedom and independence. If you ever go to the island you will see that it's very different to the UK.
It was the Manx fella that owned the apartment where we stayed, he is a keen biker to and has lived there all his life that told me that the national speed limit does apply but it's not enforced but you will get fined if you ride or drive like a total twat!
Been over there a few times ... Only once when the TT has been on ... Was good to experience it but the best time to go is a few weeks before the TT is on... You get to see what the Isle of Man is really like and it is so much more enjoyable.
I've booked the ferry for 31may-08Jun 16 (half practice week half race week). Really looking forward to it; planning on taking my van with 2 bikes & camping kit in the back. I've been offered a house share but it's a bit pricy so likely to sort a place to camp out.
There is no speed limit in the national speed limit areas on the isle of man. The problem is not the speed , the crashes are usually caused by people doing 60mph over the mountain and just taking the racing line without using their fecking mirrors. we were talking to several cops while the roads were closed and they said it had been a quiet year for accidents this year. They had no problem with the speed issue ,indeed after being sat talking for an hour waiting for the road to open ,the cop just said don't wait behind me, go passed me. He also said that he had somebody saying previously to him ,why are you not going after the people going fast? to which he explained the national speed limit thing . People go over there without learning about the road rules and then complain because somebody buzzed passed them at 150mph because they don't use their bloody mirrors.
That is a real shame because the Manx people are proud of the Island and showing a bit of respect and common decency doesn't cost a thing! I would have had to have said somethin to that froggy twat the thing is when I was in Paris it is spotless! You see vans pull up with a gangs of workers with bin liners in hand jumping out on a mission! So he should know better!!....
It's not the folk going slower who cause the accidents, but the ones who take racing lines into blind corners, cutting across double white lines and not expecting anything to be round that corner. Most of the slower folk I have seen treat it like a normal road over the mountain, staying to the left. Yet some of the faster guys still cut right across them to the racing line. You can understand why some folk can get spooked by folk whizzing past. As I said it's not the speed the guys are going it, but the way they ride. There may have been slower folk taking the racing line (not that I have seen), however it is a road, not a race track first and foremost. You also get folk who if following faster guys coming up onto slower guys, one overtakes them and one undertakes them. Happened to me on Windy Corner a few years ago when I was on my 600RR. Both Germans as well. Thankfully I just held my line and my nerve. Agree re folk not using mirrors though.
All I'll say is that: 1. It's the responsibility of the person carrying out an overtake to do it safely. 2. If you are riding on a public road then use your mirrors & lifesaver check before pulling across. Even if you think you're a fast guy their will always be someone faster than you (Unless your last name is McGuinness). It's equivalent to fast group track riders putting themselves in the novice group, you just wouldn't do it so why ride like that when overtaking a novice on a public road.
Couldn't agree more Ratser. After the bedlum I witnessed this year I'll not ride over the mountain again. Seriously scary stuff. As I see it I think that the riders can be split the riders into 3 x distinct groups :- Riders who are not hanging around by any means (but slower than racer wannabees) who generally keep to the left and ride within themselves (myself included) Riders who are riding too fast for their limited ability, and Riders who are genuinely fast and who take the racing line (even around blind bends) but assume that everybody else is taking the same line and travelling at the same speed. Put the 3 x groups together and its a recipe for disaster. There is a reason why track days are split into novice, intermediate and fast groups.
