Has anyone here done a "Run What Ya Brung" run at Santa Pod drag strip ? Just wondering if there are any tips or recommendations. Thanks Matt
Did one many years ago on my gixer 750 at Santa pod. First off you will be amazed how sticky the track feels, your feet stick to the ground. You need a lot more revs than you think, if not you just bog down and go no where !! Great when you get it right thou
Thank you for the info, very useful. I suppose in Drag Racing terms 150 HP is ride on Lawnmower category !
You thinking of doing it then Mattie? wouldn't mind having a go with the old Repslow just for a laugh
Funny you should say that 'cause they have a Run What Ya Brung going on this weekend, on Sunday, weather looks good, if a bit cold. Coming from the Channel Islands these things take a bit more organising to get there, and expense, than if you live on the mainland. Definitely want to give it a go.
Yes, and in the tradition of these things, it will not be a competition, but the fastest run "will be noted" !
Going to give it a go. Got the okay for time off work, ferry booked, weather looks good. If nothing else it will be a nice little ride up to Northamptonshire from Portsmouth ! Going to Santa Pod !!
The guy on 107 was my first biking hero, George Brown riding Super Nero. I saw him in 1960 at Long Marston airfield (now Shakespeare County Raceway, which was 2 miles from where I lived). Although technically it was a sprint meeting there was a lot of the pioneering British drag racers there. Loved drag racing since.
Well that was fun ! Arrived in Portsmouth from Guernsey, and the ferry car ramp, for the top deck, broke down. So all passengers with vehicles on the top car deck had to wait all day for it to be fixed, and we were let off the ferry at 8.00 pm. Started the ride up to Northamptonshire on a cold Sunday morning, and arrived after lunch cold to the bone. Quick warm up in the Premier Inn, Wellingborough, and off to the track hoping to see some action before they close or it starts raining. Pay my money, join the queue of bikes, and ten minutes later ushered to the start line and looking down the track to the iconic Santa Pod gantry in the distance. Marshall points at my visor and suggests I close it - yellow, yellow yellow Green. 1. Just a sighting run, just like normal riding really - 113 mph - 12.52 seconds. 2. more revs - hit the rev limiter in 1st and 2nd gear - 122 mph - 12.23 seconds 2. good clean run - 134 mph - 12.31 seconds 3. giving it more revs quicker causes wheelie issues - 129 mph - 12.37 seconds Not interested in the times so much as top speeds. Do not really want to burn the clutch out revving it on the line and slipping the clutch. So get it moving and lay the power down without the wheel popping in the air and landing you on your backside ! Good fun, just wish it was twice as long ! Queue of bikes near the start. I suppose it was ok, but rather him than me ! Firebird, not as quick as a Fireblade !
Nice one mattie, well done. Good old Condor Ferries can always be relied on to be unreliable. Isn't that a Camaro RS or SS?
