Luggage

A quick question, is the tail frame in the picture strong enough to hold some form of luggage straps to hold a bag in place? Sorry if this has been asked before, I did search but found nothing, also sorry if this is in the wrong section.

Presumably it's the same tail that would hold a 100 kilo passenger if the pillion seat were on - assuming that load were evenly spread over the seat area. On that basis there should be no problem at all. If you're hooking straps onto the rear sub-frame, that also is strong enough.

Not a problem, Robbie. I'm sure many of are so concerned about doing the right thing with our bikes, we sometimes forget to look at logic and look deeper for a problem that might not be there. I know I've done it - and then comes the 'Duh' moment - as you say, too late.

Luggage? On an SP?

I'd rather ride naked than than be seen with a rack on an SP!! (No offence intended of course, Noel. Sometimes I just can't help myself. I blame genetics)

Here’s mines loaded up for the TT last year. 80 ltr bag on the seat, Oxford panniers, Rentec rack with the tent, sleeping bag and air mat on so it will take the weight lol

I hope it's OK to tag onto Robbie's thread.
I'm taking my new to me SP to the TT and already have a Cargo tail pack and some ancient panniers. Do you have any advice about attaching them to the bike? I had a quick look a prices and I'd prefer not to have to buy a whole new luggage system!

Get yourself some self adhesive foam padding (fleabay) to protect your paintwork against rubbing/scratching. I personally used bungees to keep the panniers tight to sides of the bikes (as you can see) under the rear light and over the seat. Usual tie downs to the rear pegs and rok straps on the rack. Was a little apprehensive at first but never had an issue with any of my gear, solid and balanced even at 130 coming home

 

I use the rubber matting that is supposed to stop things from moving around in a car.

 

Thanks for your replied DazK and Muffking. There's very little to attach anything to on the SP - no rear pegs - but I'll sort something out

 

But you've still got the threads for rear pegs beneath the blankers. You could easily adapt a hook arrangement or fabricate alloy strips to be secured in those peg threads, and then restore it to normal after the TT.

Seemed OK on a dry run this afternoon, although the droopy panniers look like they might need a bit of Viagra.

 

You could use bungees across the seat in to the pannier loops at the corners to tighten them in to the bike or cable tie them to the seat bag loops? just remember some small scissors or snips to remove them! lol
