Any electricians on here? I have rewired the property I just bought and have been advised by a kitchen design company to look at changing the gas hob for an induction one. Problem is I've only ran 6mm cable to the cooker thinking this was the only appliance on it. I think the norm is to run 10mm cable for a combination of cooker and hob. Wanting to know if I can just run a separate 6mm cable to induction hob. Cable for each appliance? Cheers!
So is @sinewave In essence it's about making sure that the cable and method of installing it is suitable for the load. See - http://www.cable-ratings.co.uk/ Does the oven not have a normal 13A plug meaning that it can run off the kitchen ring, leaving the 6mm cable available for the hob? No DIY sparkying is likely to be signed off though if that bothers you.
Some induction hobs are plug and play. They can be plugged into, or hard wired into your standard ring main. Check with the supplier what type you'd be buying. I previously had this type of plug and play hob, it was a Bosch hob. It's use was restricted to only been able to have two rings on boost at one time.
Yeah the oven is on a normal plug. I assumed this was wrong though as all of the original wiring was horrific and I kept reading about 6/10mm "cooker" cable. It's just a standard single oven and if I can keep that on the kitchen/bathroom 2.5mm ring main and use the 6mm for the hob that will help me out loads? My dad has assured me he has a sparky to finalise the connections, test and sign off before the main supply is reconnected. Fingers crossed lol.
Yes that's fine as long as the oven came with a plug then it's limited to 3kw via the 13A fuse in the plug anyway, so can run off the ring. Again, that's fine if Sparky is prepared to sign it off after testing then there's nothing to worry about from the safety and paperwork side of things. Just make sure that the 6mm cable & installation method are ok for the rating of the hob.
Just having a quick look today and noticed you can get induction hobs on 13a plug sockets? https://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/house...lectric-induction-hob-black-10164113-pdt.html Hopefully I can wire one of those plus the oven to the 6mm cable and I'm sorted!
Yeah. He's posted nothing about his bike for ages and now we're stuck with hobs, fuses and sockets. It's all relevant though. It's given me an idea to also get an induction hob so I can boil ALL my cleaning cloths. At least now I'm armed with sufficient info as to how to proceed with the wiring!
Is that a metaphor for your underpants And wtf is an induction hob?!? Sounds like another hideous invention to keep wimmin from straying from the confines of the kitchen to me
induction hobs converted me from being a life long gas hob fan to a get rid of this shitty gas hob type of forum member. Easier to clean, important. Easier to control. Don't forget you MUST USE INDUCTION PANS.
+1 for induction hobs. Have one here from when we moved in. Cost me a new set of good pans but so much better than other electric hob types.
It's the flat top with ceramic (or whatever) element. Easy to clean. This is mine, but I will add I have never known, nor been told that specific pans must be used with it. I have a range of cookware that has been used with no ill effect. (PS. All cat cushions removed, BUT you might spot a couple of ceramic ones on the dresser)
in my kitchen, I have a gas hob + electric over. The RCD on the fuse board is rated at 32A. What is yours rated at? I suggest you run the right cable for this application rather than a second 6mm then connect the hob & over through a junction box. If not possible, then put a dedicated wall mounted socked connected to the 6mm cable for the applianve with lower power rating. Remember you may have to declare these works when you sell the house or in the unfortunate event of an insurance claim
I'm not sure on the RCD, there is a new one waiting to go in when the time comes. Doing the calculations from manufacturers specs, even if running the hob and oven both on max, the 6mm will still be more than beefy enough. Just need to confirm this with the sparky that's coming round next week before the kitchen is ordered. Dread to think how many bikes could have been sat in the garage instead of this project!
