Anyone help please. I've no interest in cars but the times come to get another. I've been to look at a nice used SUV...18 plate Skoda-karoq it appears mint. It's at a main dealers. They've just dropped the price from 18k to 17650. Now I know from experience with bike dealers that trying to get more off once the winter price has been put on is hard, so is it the same with cars? Plus this vehicle has lots on it so its unlike a bike where you can blag bits for it instead. I'm a cash buyer and I know it doesn't count for much these days but, if it's worth me asking for another reduction, then what do you folks think would be ballpark figure? Cheers guys
Oh most definitely worth getting a reduction. If you have no trade in then go back in a day or so, tell them you’ve reviewed your finances and can manage 17k. As a cash buyer you are the one in command, they wither want a sale or they don’t. Remember it’s not new therefore they have already made their money on it. I would be firm on that. I got near 5k off new price on my 6 week old discovery sport and i haggled for 3 of that and i got free servicing for 5 years but that bit was crap!!!! Hold out and make them concede
Unlike yourself, I do have a healthy obsession with cars! You are correct in saying, cash does not carry the weight it once did, as the dealers are much more interested in selling finance/PCP/PCH deals etc. A bit similar to bikes when it comes to this time of year, people are not rushing out to buy cars for that amount of money with the festive period coming up in the same way people don't often rush out to buy bikes due to the weather constraints. If you can wait until the end of the month, the sales people will be more amenable as they have targets to achieve so will be more accommodating. Have you had a look at private sales, as you are a cash buyer this would be a route `I would be taking (and always try to do), as the car is a 2018 you still have the remainder of the manufactures 3 year warranty left, do they are still obliged to fix any niggles you have depsite not purchasing it from them. If you post a link up to the ad, you will perhaps get a little more focused advice.

Great advice there! From personal experience cash carry’s less weight now than a finance deal as the dealer makes more that way. One thing I will mention; my dad bought a brand new Kia last year. Although he had the cash to pay outright he got a £1k dealer contribution for financing the car. Went along with it; had the car delivered then immediately repaid all the finance (before the first scheduled payment) this cost him £20 so all in all a saving of £980 for making a phone call. Maybe worth seeing if any similar deals are about for finance then clearing it once you’ve taken delivery of the vehicle? With regards to cash, there’s so many issues regarding money laundering (and I guess the government wanting to know where the money comes from) it’s more of an inconvenience to dealers than a plus point now. When I bought my blade from Northwest Honda I could only pay £1k on either cash or card. The rest had to be a bank transfer (which annoyed me as I had physical cash!)
No I'm not going down with an Arthur Daley bag full of notes lol... It's cash as in bank transfer or debit card...rather than loan pcp etc.... Did it with my SP over the phone in seconds with my debit card with Hunts when they delivered it...
Having had a look since you posted the link, it appears the car is very well priced in the market. A lot of car dealers now monitor the prices nationally on the website and price their cars accordingly against like for like models. Hence the car will fluctuate in price depending on what others are out there. It will be no coincidence that the closest one to yours is priced at £17,689, hence their reduced screen price making theirs the cheapest available at the min, even if it is by a small margin! I would only be paying £17k absolute max, with some services thrown in too. As much as cash is no longer king in car deals (unless you are into pharmaceutical sales as a side line too ) you as a customer with no p/x still hold the cards. As a note, don't forget if you do see another one at a different dealership somewhere else in the country, providing your local dealer is in the same network, they will often have it brought down/up for you to have a look at!
I think Skoda will be updating the Karoq for 2020, so the current model will soon be the "old model" - they have a new look line up coming for 2020 so may want to get rid of their demonstrator
Buy it with a cash back credit card, that's what I always try and do. Double whammy as you get money for nothing and extra protection
Pleasantly surprised after running that Skoda thru Ins sites...considering I'd lost my full no claims with not having a vehicle in my name for a few years...lots around £250 to 300 fully comp with most stuff in it..wish the SP had been that lol....I reckon it's more discrimination against us bikers
Yup I would have to agree. I lost my full over 20 year bonus as i was out of the uk for 3 years and never had a policy. I got another car when i came back and i think i was about the same when i did mine 3 years ago. I can’t really whinge too much about the bike though as i got that for a tad over £400 although where i have zero excess on the car policy the bikes one is £600, so yup definitely some discrimination there!

When I bought my SP I walked in with $18,000 USD in cash. They asked me to leave and get a cashiers check..lol. When I bought the Pani V4S, I brought my Amex. Cash was not the preferred method for any dealer. I would find a good used private sale if I were you, much easier to bargain with.
I would have said, 'Stuff you,' and walked out - straight to another dealer. Serious. I don't think a buyer should cop that sort of crap!!
It’s to try to reduce money laundering @nigelrb - every dealer these days has a maximum cash transaction amount I’ve seen it as little as £500 and never more than £5,000. I think there’s an EU regulation that limits it to €10,000 so legally you'd be safe at the gbp conversion on the day you buy, but a dealer is going to keep well clear of whatever that amount is.
