Recently started back at the gym trying to lose some weight and tone up a bit. Does anyone have an routines/advice from what I’d call a novice gym goer? thanks.
You're really better off getting one of the instructors to write up a program based upon their equipment and your available times of attendance. I could certainly PM you some plans and ideas tomorrow. It might be after I've been to my Honda dealer though!
Yes I am thinking that’s the best way to get to where I want to be Nigel, I’ve never been really confident in that sort of setting but noticed lately I hold myself back in what I perceive to be my body image, I really would like to be in better ‘shape’ to help with my own confidence.
I'm lucky enough to be able to eat and drink as much as I like whilst remaining the lean athletic figure that I was when I was 16 years old...... So no gym for me I wouldn't have the time anyway
I tend to go in phases as to what I do at the gym. Sometimes weeks of treadmill running, or cross trainer plus rowing machine, and currently am mainly doing swimming with a mix of front crawl and breaststroke. Never had a personal trainer, but then getting beasted by PTIs for years kind of put me off them
Damn costly extravagance I reckon. I guess for the weak-willed, or those who need the added push, a PT is worthwhile, but the ones I know of are around the £50.00 an hour mark. But even at say £20.00 per hour, one would need at least 20 hours to attain noticeable results. [And these results would include sessions without PT also]
I used to use an app called Jim Stoppani shortcut to size. Decent routines in there and you could always build your own routine too. That was before marriage and a new born, then the gym was a distant memory. On a different note, any one road cycle and buy clothes from Le Col as i have a £50 off voucher if anyone can make use of it.
Monday: Squats... Bench Press...Bent over rows. (4 x 10 reps of each) Wednesday: Squats...Military or Push Press...Bicep Curls...Push ups (4 x 10 reps of each) Friday: Same as Monday The following week do Wednesday's routine on Monday and Friday and do Monday's on Wednesday. Cut out the booze. Eat plenty.
I'd like to point out that I'm no pro. This is simply the routine that I use to stave off early death and USS (Unsightly Swimwear Syndrome).
Last night did Bodypump followed by Body Combat classes...fekkin hard 2hours of killer workouts - 700 then 800 calories burned respectively in those classes. Tonight and tomorrow I will be at Spinning class then back to Bodypump on Thursday night Eat loads of fruit, some nuts and drink plenty of water; people say cold water but unless it's tropical weather I prefer room temperature!
My gym routine consists of riding past it thinking I should go back some day. I imagine if I get fat, I will go back.
I used to do gym but found out if I road pedal the weight comes off after seeing the new blade in pics yesterday need to pedal more....up to 100miles a wk hopeing real cold weather holds off got a while don't mind light drizzle but not ice.....if you want to stay lean don't push heavy wights light weights lots of reps....otherwise you will bulk up and then when you stop it will turn to chubby time... Try to Build a routine is my advice then it becomes a way of life...
Holy crap! That is some dedication. Makes me feel slack, although I am getting keyed up for classes as there is a new gym opening a few streets from me later this month. I haven't had much to do with the different forms of classes, but I do know that they're a sure-fire way to keep motivated and keep weight off. Not peeing in your pocket, but that's so inspiring! Old wive's tale. Muscle can not turn to fat - two physiologically different compounds. The true science about bodybuilders and others 'turning to fat' when they stop is because their eating habits either remain the same (with calorie intake exceeding expenditure) and/or their diet changing to such an extent that they're consuming sweeter and fattier foods (with more calories) than they were ingesting during their training years. Consequently, the muscle tissue through non-exercise will atrophy (decrease) whilst the fat cells will increase, thereby resulting in 'chubby time'. Granted, for the enthusiasts, gym and or fitness regimes can (and should) become a way of life. This week, I turned over 40 years of continuous gym work with no more than a 4-month layoff. (Probably through weddings or divorces - can't remember which) And 100 miles per week bike target. That's way up there with @hitch . Good going. I'm still yet to buy my Halfords bike!
Personally I find classes the best way to keep motivated as you state. Agree that it should and does become a part of daily routine. I used to lift weights, not seriously and never really got musclebound but now I prefer the keep fit/lean exercise. I love Bodypump, its basically an all over workout using weights (as heavy as you can) over multiple repetitions on all body parts all set to music (granted some of the tracks are crap - warmup, squats, chest presses, back exercises (standing rows etc), triceps, biceps, lunges (aaargh), shoulders then finally abs (and a cool down). Spin classes are MEGA popular at my local gym, you have to book 2 weeks in advance. Very good cardio workout with zero impact on joints, great for heavier participants taking their first tentative steps into fitness or those with gammy knees I HIGHLY reccomend either if you have the facility nearby - a bit daunting at first with not knowing the "moves" but it all soon falls into place and becomes addictive
Working from home today, so will go and do a sneaky Body Combat class this morning This is why it's important to exercise
