As you know, I did fairing changeover and wheel changes on my 2011 and never came across any circlip.

You're probably aware they'd typically be used to either secure a seal or contain the end of a shaft.

As an aside, I was frantic last week when I found a small black Philips screw near the front wheel of my 954 when I was cleaning. I hadn't been doing any 'work' other than cleaning, so I looked everywhere and couldn't even find a similar screw or hole for it. And then it dawned on me. It had unwound itself from the 5-wheel office chair I was using on the driveway?

So, your clip might not be related to either your or your son's work.

Isn't there one of those in the foot pegs? I'm sure I saw one when I replaced the offside peg a few years back

could be a footrest securererer, if you’ve had Nigel round, could be off his cleaning chair...

I’d imagine if it was important you’d know about it by now, could be off some tools?

I don't like the look of the rust on it, ;) I have stripped a lot off my bike and not come across any circlips.

It's that small and looks old that it could have come in to the yard on the bottom of your boots maybe
