After my selling my 'new' VTR Firestorm after only 70 hours ownership, I thought it would be good to hear of others' experiences of short ownership, whether through financial probs, hated the bike, or write-offs. I know @Brom66 turned his Ducati around after a short time - how long was it?
I generally keep cars and bikes for around two years...... And then I get bored! Having signed up for my new car for four years it's highly likely I'll keep that for the term as its ideal for my needs and does everything I want. In the last four years though, I've had 3 different bikes!! I seem to get bored after a year where bikes are concerned...... Will I hang on to the SP for another one?? Time will tell..... The fact that I've just renewed the insurance is a good sign but if I test ride a V2 in February it could all go tits up again
My shortest ownership was a 2006 R1200GS a few years ago. Bought it thinking it was what the wife and I needed for a few tours. Did a tour with her to Scotland which worked out well, but then did a tour round Europe without her and it bored me to tears. Sold it after 10 months ownership. Really great bike in many ways just couldn't live with that performance long term, no amount of comfort can make up for that power delivery. I really hate cars and just run them into the ground, 5 years+ everytime. Doubt many will beat your 70hrs Nigel!
MG metro 2 weeks Sold it and had to pick the log book off the floor from the post man the day I sold it wish I had it now
Mate had one, I jokingly said I could open it with a spoon. A few beers later I proved I was correct and didn't even damage the locks
I'm sure I've mentioned already that I once changed a speedo cable in a Metro by tipping it on to its side...It was brown With bikes I have tended to have them long term but cars were a different matter in my youth...started the day with a Fiesta, trade in for another Fiesta, then a Sierra (estate) and it was a bloody state, then back to a Fiesta...all on the same day! Granted it was all part of a master plan to get the last Fiesta as the guy selling it wanted a Sierra....ah memories
Cars normally a year - two years is my longest, bikes normally 3 years - shortest was a bandit (6months - and 3 of those it was tucked away for winter) shortest car ownership was 3 days - bought a car as a project sold it for profit before even applying for the v5. maybe that’s why I’m piss poor after losing so much on my vehicles over the years!
Most bikes 2 to 3yrs although I once bought a new R6 one of the 1st ones in 1998 based on reports bad mistake like a 250cc with a twitchy front then a week later went to GXSR 600 school at Mallory park and loved it so bought one and the R6 went,,,,,had my last blade for 5 yrs ..as 2.5 yrs of that abroad working in Saudi so no need to change as not on it that much....in 2nd year of sp will keep for a while yet unti warrenty up...,July....Cars used to change a lot but had my last one a merc e350 coupe for 7 years lovely car now had Range Rover for 3 years and is a event every time I drive it....pampered by Autoglym...
Don't change either that often. I can't be bothered with the chew or the depreciation. I've had 3 bikes in the last 10 years and only 11 cars in the last 28 years. And one of those cars wasn't owned for long because it was a lemon. I'm now on the company car teat so I get a new one every 3 years
Only owned 10 cars since I passed my test back in 85 so averages out at 3.5 years per car. Put 85k on my last one and currently have put 25k on this one but it will go up a lot more as with the commute to work I will be doing 2k per month, definitely out of pch territory.. Only had 4 bikes in the past 11 years, but one did only last 11 months before I wrote it off so excluding that I am about 3.5 years per bike too. My current bicycle is coming up for 12. Guess I don't swap that often.
Holy crap BSS. Since November 2016, I have racked up 17 purchases. Turned around a few, but still have 7 with 2 on the way. Might be time for a bit of self-control.
I owned the Pani V4S for a few months, hated the wretched thing. I have owned 24 cars in 30 years. When I was a young lad, I would buy the cheapest car I could find, wait for it to die and leave it where it died. I was also broke and was moving a lot due to my profession. It was cheaper and easier to leave a car somewhere when I got orders than it was to lug it around.
Have been much more bikeswappy than with cars. On my 4th motorbike in 2 years since passing my test. But cars are a different matter. Had my daily driver for 15 years, classic #1 for 12 years and classic #2 for 4 years. Still have all of them. Seems to be easier to swap and change bikes but maybe it’s all in the head because they’re smaller and more overtly toy-like?
Jez it was the same in Saudi dealers would beg you to take a WoW car you could sign up then just ditch it at the airport and walk away only of course you had no intention of going back....
Sorry for late reply but I've been on a new years holiday. Bought the 2016 Ducati 1299 in Nov 2016, had for nearly 3 years, would have kept it but for lack of reliability only £11k in 3 years....., absolutely nothing I didn't like about the bike absolutely gut wrenching decision to part ex, but couldn't keep it if it kept having issues. Quickest turn around was for the predecessor of the Ducati which was a BMW S1000rr Tyco bought in June 2016, another awesome bike that I didn't want to get rid of, actually only had it for 6 weeks, the remaining 3 months it was left in dealers while we had happy discussion's after a hashed first service. Also have a 2016 ZZR 1400 performance sport which I just paid off, but she's a keeper . Edited to say 1999 ZX9r C2 / T reg / 15 month 13k's 2000 ZX9r E1 / W reg / 6 months 6k's 2001 Hayabusa / Y reg / 14 years 5k's yep 5 k's 2014 ZX10r Tom Sykes Rep / 14 reg / 2 years 8k's 2016 BMW S1000 rr Tyco / 16 reg / 6 weeks 600 miles 2016 Ducati 1299s / 66 reg /3 years 10k's 2016 ZZR 1400 / 66 reg / 3 years 6k's still own 2019 Honda SP2 / 69 reg / 4 months 42 miles Just for Nigel
I still have a soft spot for this thing, put a Yoshi on it as well - but the horrible throttle response at slow speeds was not acceptable. Only had it 11 months. The legend that is the Suzuki GSX-S1000 (with the K5 GSX-R motor)
