Afternoon all. Managed to get the blade in for an annual service week after next (dealers reopening!) - Doble's in Coulsdon, I rate them highly. I'm sure it needs new pads and fluid so they're going to do a brake service and I've ordered HEL lines for them to fit. (I'm happy to do cosmetic spannering but as you can tell, I like to outsource risk haha...) BUT I've also noticed marking on the front discs - see pics. I've given it a scrape with a fingernail and it doesn't seem to budge. Anyone know what this is? On the phone I did ask how much new discs are - quoted me £460 for new discs all round (and bolts) . Hoping it doesn't need that... Bike is 2008 with c. 14k mi on it (I bought it at 11k) and I don't ride it hard but can't speak for the previous owners... All help much appreciated!
Dunno what that is exactly but guessing the pads sat on the discs for an extended period causing some sort of corrosion. Incidentally I use atom mac to inhibit corrosion on disc, seems to work. Personally I wouldn't be too worried about it but if you wanted to replace you can get pretty much brand new oem off ebay for less than £200.
Could be - the bike does only get out every few weeks and sat for a fair while in the first part of lockdown... Thanks, I'll have a browse through the bay if that's needed! (but hopefully not)
Was the bike cleaned/detailed with an acid based cleaner? My project bike had been detailed regularly before I got it (and ridden in all weather's), and there was tons of corrosion. Rear Disc had pitting that looked like yours. Was recently mot'd and nothing mentioned. Would think this was OK, just look out for any cracking. I replaced all of mine as got cheap from M&p and front calipers had seized on whilst riding - £85 each for EBC front discs and £20 for each set of EBC pads
As far as I know, I haven't - I usually liberally spray the Muc-off cleaner, rinse and scrub, do discs and chain with WURTH. Nothing else seems corroded. Thanks - good to know. I've heard mixed reviews re EBC discs though.. I think if it comes to it I'll stick with OEM for peace of mind haha - as Slick says - can get some zero mileage OEM on the 'bay for sub £200. I'm almost tempted to buy a set to sling in the store for whenever they're needed!
so long as the discs have no run out and are above the minimum thickness, they'll sort themselves out with the pads. Surface marks are just corrosion etc.
looks like some minor pitting from the pics but hard to tell. wouldn't worry if it's not causing any issues doesn't look too bad. You could try rubbing it with some fine emery paper and then cleanup the surface with some brake cleaner to see if it gets any better (easier if you take the wheel out). if it is just deposits and not pitting they can get baked on pretty hard. If the dealer is decent they will be abe to have a look and tell you if they're ok. You could probably get Brembo Serie Oro discs for the price they have quoted (assume they are quoting for OEM).
I'm with @TheMickster .. looks like pitting, I had some on my 1199 when I bought it... the bike had been sat for quite a while... I didn't notice any degradation to the performance of the brakes but keep an eye on it and keep the disks clean and dry before you leave it for any period of time... on the downside you'll probably want to replace them if you come to sell it...
Thanks chaps. Bike went in for service etc last week and the Honda dealership said the discs were fine. I actually bought a just-in-case pair of front discs off ebay - OEM off a zero-mileage bike for a couple hundy. Didn't want to pay dealer prices, but turns out i don't need them. If they get worse I can switch them over.
Pads take a lot of drying, I used to wash the bike when I came back from a ride then put away this included heating the pads to dry them but I still got pitting one time, Pads have metal in them which creates electrolysis between pad and disc if a conductive solution is between. Now I clean the wheels before a ride so the pads dry out,
This is a very good point - hadn't even thought about that. Standard procedure for me to wash the bike and put it straight away.
I have similar thoughts to misticker. If it’s pitted I would ride it unless the braking performance has deteriorated. As to what has caused them, what does surface of the pads read?
I’ve never been on a track! Although that is on the cards for this year - planning to book myself onto a novice sesh at brands hatch this summer, cos it’s near-ish so I can ride there No idea I’m afraid - they’ve been binned now with new fitted! Going to go out for a good run tomorrow make sure all feels goooood
