Just wanted to ask what to look for on checking fairings to see if they are original or after market? Going to look at an rr4 and i'm adamant they are aftermarket fairings but seller insists the bike came from Honda like it so can only be a dealership dream machine special if they are original panels.

I'm sure it's been asked a hundred times on here so apologies for asking again - if I remember before I think I saw something about the fairing clips are the telltale sign but then I can't remember what the originals look like!

I've had 2 sets of aftermarket fairings, and provided the moulding leftovers have been well removed, you are going to struggle to tell the difference. Mine even have the Honda markings inside all the plastics!
The big difference is the material itself... genuine is markedly more flexible and you can really feel they'll flex & bend a long way before fracturing. The aftermarkets I've had feel like they'll crack that bit sooner. That said, there's not much in it!

I put my most recent set on with all OE clips/fastenings, so that wouldn't provide a clue I'm afraid.

I thought mine was Honda, just that it didn't show in the guide for that year for some reason.
Then I found it on 'LoveMoto' fairings. Exactly my paint scheme.
So they did me a new tank cover to match.

OK thanks both i'll just assume they are aftermarket.

Just did an hpi check and 8 owners with only 14k miles - smacks of something up with the bike so giving it a miss anyway...

possibly, but then at the same time many people have bikes and rarely use them and then sell them on (too fast, no time to ride, need money etc etc) ... I bought a GSXR K5 which had 9 owners and 14K also... ran like a dream... Honda paint schemes are generally boring so wouldn't be put off by aftermarket fairings... obv your decision but surely worth a look if it's close and what you are looking for?

I know exactly what you are saying and it's one of those I want to take the bike but then on the other hand will be wondering if there is anything up with it. The history is all spot on and was sold by a main dealer in 2017 as one of the sales so makes me think the bike could be fine. It doesn't help the seller talks a lot of rubbish and doesn't know bikes, nice enough bloke but advertising the bike as doing 210 mph because its been tuned is I think why no one has bought it lol. It's an aftermarket can, power commander and dyno run so nothing out of the ordinary at all although he swears its a full system when the paperwork he sent over only lists and charges for an end can  It's also an hour and 40 minutes away so a fair old round trip only to find its a bag of nails although had a video of it running and sounds good enough. The fairings were changed 2016 as it's on the hpi as registered colour change in 2016 so has it been down the road or just someone really liked the race rep fairings that got put on. All I know is if it is genuine i'd be getting an absolute bargain for what I agreed the price on but again makes you think if it's too good to be true then it probably is! Also one thing on the mileage is questionable, the first 3 years it only did 550 miles! Someone either bought it and never used it or its 550 track miles. After the 1st MOT the mileage all stacks up and passed the MOT every year.

I just bought a FireBlade, being delivered on Wednesday 12th (eek). It's 2017 and only has 368 miles on! The Honda dealer I bought it from sold it from new, so I was happy abt the history. As the dealer said "some people just like knowing they have a superbike in the garage", (owners prev bike was a little used Panigale too).

However.. the rest of your thoughts (ie sellers comments etc), would put me off too. Worth a 1hr40min drive to check it out.. depends on how busy you are i guess.

550 in 3 years is barely even run in! Very low for 3 owners agreed! Does sound like a trek for you to see it too... I guess it all depends on how much free time you have!! Would love to see the 210bhp dyno chart too :)

I think OEM will have Honda part codes on the insides (prob have to take them off though to really check), if it's got a seat cowl you could pop it off and look underneath (although could have standard fairing and an aftermarket cowl), i'll have a look at mine and see if there are any bits where the part number is easily visible

There's probably differences from one aftermarket manufacturer to another, but incredibly both sets I've had have the Honda mould markings/codes in all the usual places.

As above OEM parts are marked, not that hard to tell if you know what your looking for, and mileage and age and number of owners mean nothing as so many bikes don’t get used, it’s all about history, experience of knowing what to look for and a gut feel.

Well bought it LOL I couldn't resist. 15k miles and got it for £3k on the nose. Loads of paperwork with it and quill evo2 end can and power commander. Will scan the dyno run as means nothing to me so you can tell me if it's crap or alright etc! Won't know if i've got a bargain or not until I take it for it's service and MOT at some point. Just rode it home 100 miles and was spot on and loved it.

Nice that @Sp0oner but a lot of aggravation to raise £1300 (unless the Repsol had underlying issues) :D

Looks nice that!! Congrats! Get your local to give it the once over, 3k sounds like you've done well if it runs as well as it looks! :)

Not to me mate I love a bargain and rather have the £1300 back in the bank as it's been an expensive month. The Repsol was spot on although would have needed both tyres doing in the next thousand miles (this one has new tyres on it) but I felt I had to pamper it (cleaning wise) to keep it's value etc where as this I don't and can just enjoy it for what it is. I'd planned on only spending £2k and get a 929 but all the 929s I liked were £2.5k and so for an extra £500 i'd rather have the rr4. Everything I looked at that was £2k was high miles and just didn't want a 40k miles bike although I know they are bullet proof just me being a fusspot :D

Cheers, yeah I definitely want to get it checked over - it ran lovely for the 100 miles home, took it really carefully at first to suss it out then as everything seemed ok kept pushing it a little bit at a time until I had some confidence all seemed OK. By the time I got close to home I was scrubbing the new tyres in on fast roundabouts and the twisties :D

The fairings aren't my cup of tea but I don't care right now. I may in the future change them for different aftermarket ones if I see something I like but not that fussed to be honest. Was more about the miles and the actual bike itself for the money.

    Looks lovely.

Would love to hear a follow up after you've had it serviced and MOT'd

Yep will find out if it's a good'un or i've been had over once it's been checked over and post on here. It's passed every MOT it's had with only advisories for brake pads etc so no reason for me to believe all of a sudden it will fail the MOT. Front pads will need doing soon that's the only thing I could find but i'm no mechanic.
