I'm looking for a thin foam back protector, the sort of one that comes for free in the suit/jacket and which many replace with either a level 1 or 2 'proper' back protector?

Why? Bought an rst suit with level 2 back protector fitted but comfier without it and I ride with an airbag which covers front & back. Without it's back protector though the rst suit hump stuff sticks in one's shoulder blades, and hoping cheap foam ilo back protector might mitigate.

So that bit of back protection foam that's kicked around at home since you removed from either your suit or jacket for upgrade could be just what I'm looking for.?

Been researching Non-Newtonian type protector so came across these

    https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/D3O-Mesh...022815?hash=item421b5e8cdf:g:TGYAAOSwx85e9N7f

These are the same thickness as the cheapo foam, probably more comfy but provide a darn load more protection.

Nice thought, will take a look this evening. I have in past fitted just two of the layers from 4 layer forcefield hip armour just to get pants comfy. I just made a mammoth difference to comfort if suit by removing the aero hump foam pad!! It's a real interference fit in it's pocket and while it could do with shaving down in size, won't do that in case decide to sell suit on. So now looking for suitable soft foam to replace the hump. In truth the suit looks better with it removed too. But the alternative back insert suggestion is a good one and it reminded me about s20 stuff. Many thanks. Mike

I've got a level 2 Knox Microlock in the post (as recommended by @Lozzy ) to replace my Dainese D2 which as seen the road too many times.
Its the same concept material, really interested to give a good whack with bat to test it!

Might buy a few sheets of the D30 to use in the chest areas?

I've ridden with a Motoair airbag vest (lanyard trigger) for some years now and as a result no back or chest protector. Balanced risk? I have dainese and alpinestars two piece leathers that are both very comfy even with their smallish humps. In fact the dainese has no back protector provision at all. I've lost count of back & chest protectors I've tried, astars, dainese, forcefield & knox. Will stick with airbag I think and fit rst one piece with something like the d30 or thinner forcefield level one or maybe just an eva foam insert (as many oem jackets) together with wodge of some smaller, softer, more giving foam in the hump. Only reason for back foam will be to preserve fit of suit. I've already fitted extra foam layer on outside surfaces of knee/shin armour, hip and shoulder armour to ensure no twisting. Probably penalty for being tall and thin, the AStars and Dainese are EU 'long fit' sizes bought from EU, whereas RST is a size up race suit to both get +length and comfort fit. Boys and their toys......Mike

    LOL opposite problem here!

Always thought about the lack of protection I have especially neck and chest, never really considered air vests until you raised them- interesting!
The main problem I have is I have a routine before I get on and off the bike I almost go full auto! Shit happens when I add to it or disrupt it.
I can bet first time I use a lanyard activated vest I will forget to disconnect it!

Not happened yet (touch head/wood), it is a fairly strong pull needed to trigger it as after all it's a body departing the bike -- lots of weight going in dissimilar directions. I bought a Helite vest first, hated it's flour color so returned and bought a Motoair from Taiwan (of course).! I did buy the new dianese stand alone vest at end of last year but there is a really large lump of electronics/trigger mechanism included in and I could not fit it under either of my two piece leathers, a real disappointment so sent it back. It's all a balance, real safety largely in one's right hand. Mike

Read interesting medical paper that concluded that aero humps are the exact opposite of a safety item -- they prevent insertion of an airway down throat of a prone rider after an accident (but like having a pillow behind neck & shoulders) and should be cut off asap to provide assistance!! It was specifically a medical issue. Ut suggested they be either easily removable (zip or velcro) or only filled with very soft foam. Interesting! I plan soft foam route for comfort but good to know a.n.other benefit. Mike

Sorted my issue -- took the hump foam out of the suit and the rather thick RST back protector. Ordered a Forcefield ProVest, and will wear that underneath the RST instead. The Forcefield comes with a thinner CE2 back protector and provision for chest pads -- see if they are needed when it arrives and is trialled.
UPDATE: Forcefield vest now upgraded to one with the fitted chest pads included. RST suit hump foam replaced with softer foam at half the size. Vest now fits a treat under the RST one piece with it's reduced hump foam and with the RST leathers CE2 back protector removed. Problem sorted. So good that I have now sold on one of my two two piece leather suits as this RST one piece will become the day out default suit it is so comfy to ride in and has great airflow the it.
