Yes it is ! Ordered a new Ducati Monster 821 today, should be here in October they reckon. Thinking the bike should be quick enough for the road locally, as my only means of transport. Looking forward to being able to rag it around, and it should be big enough to take to France and the UK in the summer to watch the racing and to go and see my mum in the Isle of Wight. The Monster 1200, maybe if I lived in the UK. Would I ever red-line it over here ? very doubtful. So I reckon the 821 should be enough for the road. Sold the R1 - in a week at full asking price. Just noticed bikes seemed to be selling well after the lockdown, so thought to try and sell it before the end of the season - it sold almost straight away. Not really sure what to make of it all really - all a bit of a shock Ah well give the Ducati a go, see what all the fuss is about - have to buy some Ducati T-Shirts Looks like this - very nice....and reasonable price ....
You've gone from an MT10 to the R1 and then this?! I had one as a courtesy bike when the MT10 went in for its valve clearance. For me, it felt like a 125 compared to the MT10. It was fun and punchy, but I was glad to get the MT back
A few reasons, and nothing to do with comfort or anything of that nature. Living here in the Channel Islands having a big bike is all about going away - to the UK, France and beyond. France is easy to get to. No big deal at all. With this whole Covid business the chances of going away - to the UK and the continent might be likely to be less than before, maybe for a year or two at least. Lockdowns can be sprung at any time without warning. Trips away are not as certain as before. This leaves me riding a 200hp race bike around here with custodial sentences likely even at a bit above 90 mph. I have done 4,500 miles on it and never had it to the red line. I did 135 mph on it at the TT last year, as easy as anything, the bike not even breaking a sweat ! Second hand bikes were selling like hot cakes, so just chanced it as I can't go anywhere with it. It sold straight away at full price - there's the money. Job done ! The Monster 821 makes more sense for me. I can give that some stick, might even get it all the way up the rev range to the red line ! Did not need to worry about having to trade a bike in 'cause I had cash from the R1, which paid for the Monster without having to find another penny. Brand new Ducati Monster - not exactly slumming it ! I am looking forward to a more involved riding experience with something I can more likely use to the full on the road.
It does feel small that is for sure. No regrets about changing bikes, I will continue to try different bikes for as long as I am able. The R1 does not have such a noticeable dip in the revs at about 5,500 rpm like the MT-10 does. The R1 motor spins up quicker and there is not such a noticeable dip at 5,500 revs - at least that is how it seemed to me. I don't have any other motor transport, just my bike.
Sounds perfectly reasonable to me with the current situation travel wise. Enjoy it and you can always go back to an R1/MT10 in the future
makes sense to have a bike more practical for the riding that you intend to do, hope you enjoy your new bike and don’t get stuck in any lockdowns So you get to put some miles on it.
