Anyone looking forward to fitting the 'EU' speed limiting devices that are rumoured to be on all new vehicles by July 2022 and required on existing from May 2024. All supposed to be linked to GPS. April fool or pie in the sky.

I understand that even if they fit them, you can turn them off manually. So just another piece of electronic sh#t to go wrong and for them to charge more for

Getting out of control isn't it. You can spot them a mile off aswell, would be like shooting fish in a barrel if there were any police out and about.

The insurance company's will demand them fitted and working for your insurance to be valid, they will then download your last days riding before telling you you have been speeding and they will not pay out..

They never insisted on black boxes and they have been around for 15 years now.

Does anyone really believe they will stay optional/manual? Give it one or 2 fatalities where a limiter was disabled and the press will go on the rampage about killers who could have been stopped.

Look at seat belts, fitted but optional to wear, and then made compulsory. Even worse they made it compulsory to have them retrospectively fitted to cars registered from 1965 onwards even though the law was passed in 1968.

Enjoy your freedom whilst you can.

And yet only 5.6% of road traffic accidents are caused by exceeding the speed limit.

However having an accident at higher speed can lead to more risk of Injury or death

    1 Driver/Rider failed to look properly 33,897 39.9%
    2 Driver/Rider failed to judge other person’s path or speed 18,047 21.2%
    3 Driver/Rider careless, reckless or in a hurry 13,203 15.5%
    4 Poor turn or manoeuvre 11,025 13.0%
    5 Loss of control 9,232 10.9%
6 Pedestrian failed to look properly 7,182 8.5%
7 Slippery road (due to weather) 6,153 7.2%
8 Travelling too fast for conditions 5,048 5.9%
    9 Exceeding speed limit 4,727 5.6%
    10 Sudden braking 4,606 5.4%

one reason this is being introduced is introducing autonomous vehicles, these can not cope with speeding motorists.

There are many videos on YouTube where the inbuilt cameras incorrectly recognise a speed limit.
80kmh being read as 30kmh and so on. This then gets compounded by the ridiculous amount of street furniture in the UK and the systems are already proving to be unreliable with many manufacturers voicing concern.
This will remain an advisory system for a good while yet where it will tell you to slow down rather than slow down rhe vehicle whether you like it or not.
Although tesla have been claiming their cars can run autonomously for years they are a big voice against this legislation especially as it requires any driver notification to be in direct line of sight of the driver and their newer cars are run with a centre dash board / console type display screen which in the UK is clearly to the drivers left so not in direct sight of driver. So they would have redesign their dashboards or build in head up displays.
HGV will often have a sign on the back of them saying 50mph or 80kmh max etc so any following car will read that and believe its in a 50 mph limit and could ,in theory, stop you from overtaking it.
The whole system is somewhat flawed at present but where it takes us in 10 or 15 years is anyone's guess but I would suggest the writing is on the wall but I will hopefully be nudging 70 then and prob won't give a toss by then but then again maybe I will ???

I'll preface this by saying I am against this autonomous vehicle technology....however, surely the answer lies with GPS, no? Sat nav often shows the stated road speed limit with a little speed sign on the screen; manufacturers could do a lot worse than incorporating that technology.

I think they are using sat nav tech, and in 2022 they will slow your car down, you then have to put the throttle fully down to override the limiter, but it then records it on the onboard black box to say you have overridden the limiter,
and I suppose in the long term can report back to the authorities that you have been speeding

    edit

Just taken this from the autotrader site

    How do speed limiters work?
The speed limiter technology, called Intelligent Speed Assistant (ISA) uses GPS data and/or traffic-sign-recognition cameras to determine the maximum speed allowed in an area. The system then limits the engine’s power and the vehicle’s speed to that limit.
You can override the system by pressing hard on the accelerator, but the system will reactivate every time the car is started. However, the speed limiter will send haptic, audio and visual warnings until you start driving within the speed limits.

    Several possibilities...
    Won't happen - don't care then
Will only be on new cars - don't care then
Won't work on bikes - don't care then
I can turn it off - don't care then
    ...so in short I don't care :)

I'm sure you will find hacks/tools on the web to disable if needed, just like with ABS on a bike

    Or...

.....Insurance Companies reduce their liability coverage if it isn't operating during an accident?

....Government and Courts increase penalties for people involved in incidents where it isn't operating?

One way or another they will make it virtually compulsory, hopefully not before I hang up my lid, but I won't be holding my breath.
