My Sons 05 blade has been using up batteries for sometime.Last week he had to push start. We charged the Battery and checked it on bike with a Lidl Alternator tester it showed full batt but the charging light did not come on even when reved. Put meter on bike Battery Voltage with nothing on was13.02V. Ign on 12.48V. Started and at 1.5K RPM = 12.33. At 3K RPM =12.59V. At 4k RPM = 12.71. At 5K RPM =12.41. Then checked Reg output Red + Grn wires At 1.5K RPM =11.2V and at 4K RPM = 30.5V, Then checked AC output from alternator Yellow wires Volts between 1/2 = 47.5V--1/3 = 56.5V--2/3 =33.5V. The bike was with a Honda Dealer for replacement of Alternator on a Recall. I saw on the forum that if change was done as per Service Bulletin there should be a punch mark under the first letter of the VIN. There is no mark on this bike.Incidently When the DC connector from Reg was opened there is signs of overheating on the green connector on loom side
Hi, The stator and flywheel in the 04/05 RR was indeed a recall but unfortunately the bikes too old now to be honoured by Honda. My stator burned up three times and last year I bought the genuine honda updated OEM stator and flywheel circa £350.00 if I recall correctly for my O4RR. I'm not sure if the values from your reg/rec or stator are within limits but your battery voltage definitely isn't however I'm sure you know that. I'd be very surprised if your stator hasn't burned up again and maybe damaged the reg/rec as that's exactly what happened to mine last year. Originally I had the stator re-wound by West Country windings for about £110.00 but 4k miles later it burned up again and left me stranded on the motorway. I noticed when I bought the bike three years ago that according to the paperwork the stator had been replaced already so in 20k miles it's gone through three stators. I think the best course if action if it is infact the stator and of course if you are planning to keep the bike is to replace the stator and flywheel with the updated OEM parts and replace the reg/rec at the same time if this is found to be faulty too. For the record the blade should charge the battery around 14-15v at around 5krpm. Best if luck.
Not Charging Thanks for your reply. It looks like we have a serious problem so we have ordered an OEM Stator / Reg package and hope it fixes our problem. You dont seem to be having much luck either but things can only get better, anyway Happy Accident free riding. By the way I am Told that the Suzuki Regulators are of better Quality and there is a Guy here who will fit to Blade with wiring alteration due to Different connections
I wouldn't say Suzuki have any better luck with there OEM regs they recalled a series of bikes as they regs were catching fire burning the bikes! They have just as many issues with them burning out too! As far as better regulators Yamaha actually have a better regulator part fitted to some models, a standard regulator uses an old shunt method whereby the reg shorts any excess voltage above the battery charge voltage to the frame which in turn after a short period of time generates a lot of heat which can lead to reg failure and depending on how the unit fails it can cause a short to the stator causing the stator to burn out and wiring to heat up and possibly melt. The newer method regulators used on some yams (can't remember off the top of my head which ones!) they use MOSFET electronics which is a more efficient way of getting rid of the excess charge voltage and doesn't generate as much heat as the shunt units. If purchasing an aftermarket regulator I would recommend you to look for a MOSFET based product as your replacement. Good luck with the repairs
why won't honda do the recall? suzuki do them now still on there 05 bikes, surely if there is something wrong with the bike and there has been a recall, honda are compelled into doing it
Trust me I tried! They'll only honour the recall on bikes up to seven years old. They said they might consider replacing the defective components on mine as a goodwill gesture if my bike had a full Honda service history and the book was fully stamped, when I asked them who has a ten year old bike with a FHSH? They said unless it's exactly that they wouldn't consider it. So I had to bite the bullet and buy the parts at full retail.
thats just crap, it's not your fault that they built something that isn't 100% perfect and needs to be tweeked after a few years.... you wonder why you even go to a honda dealer these days
Electrex World Reg/Rec uses new technology. Look for RR110. I've got the 06 with the upgraded stator/rotor but as Bandit had my stator go and had in rewound from WCW. I have an awful feeling the stator has started to go again even with the MOSFET RR. Battery tested at 12.6v, then 14.1 at 15k and high beam on, switched everything off and tested battery again, up to 13v but it's lumpy under 4k and that's how it felt when my previous stator went.
Pateli, it's important for you to order the updated stator and flywheel not just the stator on its own. They do come as a pair together under one part number but ironically they are the same price individually as they are together. I hope your Honda dealer has ordered the pair for you. If you do a search for my previous posts you will find the exact part number for the pair and price too.
