Think the first 20 are picked, negotiated by the top 20 riders based on time of previous years. And they are the numbers they set off at. And think the rest are decided by qualifying times. Pretty sure it is something like that anyway.
I knew that much, but want to know why mcPint has 1 and MD 6, do the seeded 20 choose their numbers by results of the year before??
Think McG always likes going first. Some have their favourite numbers, so they just all apply for a number I think. Nothing scientific in how they choose them, or are allocated them as far as I know. My first year at the TT Gaz Johnston was number 1, McG was 2, Hutchy 4, Anstey 5, Plater 7, Guy 8, M. Dunlop 9 etc.
