Anybody else read this weeks mcn yet . it seems that ducati have choosen to use a 925cc engine instead of going for a full blown 1000cc. Mcn say it makes the bike smaller more agile and gives it a greater spread of power. quite an interesting alternative to all the other teams
yeah i saw this today, inreresting read - from a simplistic understanding that i have, it made sense, why have 1000cc that you need to T/C to make it usable power, when you can have a better spread of power without the gizmo's on the 925cc and let it scream a bit more and get the same end result with less weight! think they will struggle to make the fuel last though if this is true. bit like the blade v the bmw1000rr.... hated the bm as the T/C was cutting the "superior power" all the time - w*nk if you ask me. give me the power and i'll either use it or be too scared too, dont let me have it then a box cutting it all the time!! ha ha
Huh. Greater spread of power with a smaller engine with modern electronics it does'nt make sense Smaller and agile maybe will just have to wait and see.
thats the point mate, it allows less electronics so a better feel as apposed to a pulsing rear end where the T/C is cutting in! i dont think it actually puts out any less power, they just rev them faster which puts the power higher up in the rev range. (i think from what i read this morning)
Or genius engineering solution?? Let's face it - can't get any worse for ducati / Rossi than last year...
Out of all the teams its seems like honda are the ones struggling with fuel consumption but nothing new there it took them 4 years to get it sorted on the 800. As for for the 925cc engine producing power over a wider margain i think that is down to the fact that it doesnt produce much less power but is capable of revving much higher so it is producing similar power over a much wider range. personally i think it is a brilliant idea. but then in theory so was the carbon fibre frame
In effect by adjusting the bore and stroke (out my depth here) and letting it rev higher that's pretty much what they've done I think, the nett effect is a 925cc lump....
I've always heard there's no substitute for cc, so surely they could could have tweeked it to get closer to the 1000 than what they have at the moment!
Perhaps it's something to do with the effect of the stroke length on the dynamic of the bike. I know there's something about the L twin having an optimum balance between the accelerating piston and the decelerating one. Maybe that capacity gives them the best numbers for this effect. But I'm out of my depth too.
