Another busy day on the bike and mr postman delivered a heap of goodies so set about getting then fitted ! Got my rear wheel all cleaned and polished up , got my new renthal sprocket fited aswell. Got all new brake pads fitted and braided hoses too , aswell as the carbon fibre heel plates. Just need my chain to arrive now to finish off the rear end However had a disaster with the crash bungs. Got the fairings all mraked out , drilled etc and while fitting the last one I managed to strip the thread on it ! So annoying as I had the new bolt in and out beforehand to make sure it was ok . So m12 fine tap and die nut required However after cursing and swearing for half a hour I just got on with it so have a mate coming round tomorrow with a set
I take it you are going to drill out and helicoil that hole mate. If not the thread will be weak, as you have just removed most of the material from the thread.
I`ve checked it out and the original engine bolt screws in fine so I guess I`m quite lucky as it seems to be just the crash bung bolt that has stripped. I`m only running the tap up the hole as a precaution. Its the crash bung bolt tht needs recutting
Please don't think I'm being a nob, but that build up on the thread is from the ally from the engine threaded hole mate. Unfortunately the bolts are a lot harder material and the material you see on the bolt is almost certainly from the tapped hole from your engine. (if you try and torque the bolt up after re-tapping it, you will just strip it again) Don't worry too much though. It is a relatively easy fix. All you need to do is drill the hole out to the required tapping size for the M12 helicoil, tap it to suit, and fit a helicoil (which will be much stronger than standard as it is made from stronger material). For the helicoil you'll need both the helicoil itself and also the tool to fit it. If you need any info ie drill size or whatever let me know. PS we use these all the time in work.
Ok Thanks for that Colin . I will double check tomorrow and let you know as obviously I won`t take any chances with this
If I can help in any way mate let me know. I'm in work tomorrow, so I'll pre-empt things by getting the drill size and stuff looked out for you. We may even have the tools and helicoils here. I know it's in hindsight but use copperslip where possible on bolts. It stops the heat building up in the threads when screwing together, and also helps on removal again.
Aye cheers mate , well it does need helicoiled but my mate has one so he is bringing it round next week sometime for me. It turns out that the bolt is slightly bent and we think thats what has caused it . Have emailed the place whereIi got the bungs from to see if they can send out a new bolt too. So just continued with the rest of the jobs outstanding. Got all the brak bled and the screen, front hugger all back on. Can`t do much more now till I get the new chain and the helicoil kit. Was such a nice day for a ride aswell Dying for a blast again !
Cheers mate , just got the chain and guards to fit and new levers once they arrive and thats it basically ready to go again. (well apart fromt the helicoil to take care off !! )
It's great when it all comes together again ain't it The helicoil shouldn't take long to sort mate, so long as you have the right tools it's easy enough and will be even better than standard.
Aye think I`m gan to tax it again and if theres any nice days I`ll go for a blast . Dinna think i could lay it up till April !!
Well I had a successful day today on the bike. Got my new chain fitted along with stomp grip , new levers for the clutch and brakes (Shorty brake lever but standard length clutch lever) , HRC socks and also got the engine mount drilled out and hellicoil fitted so thats the crash bung sorted out too. Gave her a final polish then put the cover on . ROLL ON APRIL !!! Here was todays goodies to get on with Got everything fitted eventually so heres the pics And the final one.... See you in March ! lol
