Got a nail in one of my tyres and from what I can tell it's in a position which shouldn't be plugged. Reading online you see change all 4, change 2 on same axle or it doesn't make a difference just change the 1. Any experience? I dont want to fork out for 2 new tyres if I can help it. Definitely not 4. Ideally just the affected one but if its strongly recommended to change both on the same axle I would change the pair.
Cheers Noel. I'm going to have a look tomorrow and see how much thread is left on the other side as if it's not too far off needing changed I might aswell get them done together. Hoping it still has plenty life left in it and I can get away with 1!
It depends on the differentials in the box/axles. If they're all open diff's then changing one tyre is fine. If we're talking viscous couplings and LSDs then you need to think carefully about the different speeds of each wheel and which diff will be affected. What's the car?
Hey mate, sorry but I can’t remember if you got the Audi or a Beemer but if it’s got an electronic Haldex unit you can’t have more than 1.5 mm difference between all tyres. The damage is slow to happen but costs a packet to put right... You could try some of your local places for a part worn of the same type with similar depth...might be a bit of a faff but the fitters will have them. A lot of folks go in with similar and are told they need a set and buy them not thinking what happens to the ones that come off. Normally the workers get to sell them on and keep the cash as beer money. Worth a pop

Just had a quick read, apparently it's a 'crown gear' diff? The pre facelift had a Torsen type but they changed to crown gear whatever that is! The 4wd is always operating if that makes a difference. It's not one of those that has a button to turn it on or off. Think I'm going to end up doing the 2 just to be safe.
I had a puncture on my Navara with 1500miles on it, like yourself it was in a non repairable place, slipped the tyre fitter £20 that was 30000 miles ago and it still going. But mine doesn't do more than 60 locally but it does tow a 3.5ton trailer, which is when it would be more likely to go. The other side is Mrs BMW X1 was told we needed new tyres for MOT, but need to change all 4 as the parameter was going to be to great if we just changed 2, and tbh since we had all 4 done the drive under acceleration is far better. I reckon the parameter were out before as the car felt like it was juddering when pulling away to the point I sad to the Mrs feels like the gearbox is gonna go bang maybe time for a change !
Generally 3/4 of the central area of the tread should be safe for a minor repair. Too close to the side wall and it has more chance of failure.
I think I will struggle to get it plugged and I'm meant to be going to Bournemouth in it soon so probably not the safest Are tyre shops generally ok with the customer supplying their own tyres? I can get them off tyreleader for about 50 quid less than most other places.
Got it plugged this morning, twice It was borderline for being ok to plug. Took it to a little garage only a couple streets away and he said he didnt do repairs, said no worries I will see if I can find someone. He said give me a look and said actually he will do it. I was expecting tyre off and proper plug but he just whipped out the nail and shoved a bit of rubber in. Looked like chewing gum Only cost a fiver so thought sod it, now its temporarily fixed I can travel further to get a proper plug and ended up at Kwickfit.
