Right then, I've just booked a few days in that London for the two of us and a mate and his wife and will be staying just sarf ov the rivah! (brave I know, but remember we have Barnstaple down here which I believe was the inspiration for Zombieland). Now I can find my way around the smoke in the same way I can find my way around Rome, Amsterdam, Geneva etc. in that they are all places I've been to in a work related situation rather than a leisure (except for Amsterdam, of course), so Usually, when I'm there, I'm in a hurry to get to my meeting then in a hurry to get back to the M3 before the place turns into a car park. So I rarely get a chance to savour the place. We're all aware of my geekiness so I'm not in any trouble picking venues to pander my cultural needs, the others have mentioned 'musical theatre' but I think I'll be washing my hair that day, but any pointers on where to get some decent, but not mega money, scran and a decent craic between the Southwark Tate and to twinkly bits would be welcome.
I like the Cafe de Hong Kong on the Charing Cross rd for scoff. The Chinese we went to for our Winter Warmer was gleaming too. Freedom will be along with the name in a minute. Having said we were a small group of smooth urban sophisticates. I doubt they'll let you in, Ken.

Canteen used to be pretty good. Just behind festival hall. Short walk from the tate is cantina at vinopolis very good food at reasonable prices. Be worth walking round to borough market as loads of great place round there. Try toptable website and you can narrow it down to area/cuisine/price and often get a good deal. Long way away but had a stunning meal in a brasserie in earls court last weekend. Food was worth twice what i paid.
you could always try Levant If there is a group of you and your hungry its a great place to go plus you get to watch the girls dance! Just follow the candles and petals on the floor...

On a more serious note (I know it's out of character. I've got a cold) there are a selection of the chains between Southwark and the West End from Eat to Nando's and there's a Pizza Express on the river with cracking views. You could also eat at the Tate Modern though the food is dear and a bit poor. But the views! Oxo Tower, but I've never eaten there but ditto views. There's a lovely Cote on Tavistock Street near the Royal Opera House but you'll probably need to book. And the Pret a Manger on Cranbourn Street closes late for post meal coffee.
