I've been reading in a few posts and people have mentioned about visors & the laws. What visor do you use and why? I ride with a clear visor when I leave for work early and its dark, I think the pinloc inserts are the best thin ever when i got my first Arai lid with it and rode to work with out steaming up it was amazing! During daylight hours I always use a blue iridium visor. I don't think it is that dark a tint and does a great job of cutting out glare from a low sun. I have been to a couple of the bike safe days and ridden with a police rider and they have never said a thing.... interested to hear your thought's Ozz
Dark (daytime only), could not give a sh#t what the Police say I choose to plan my day and know when the sun goes down! If its OK for drivers to ware sun glasses then I think its OK for me to use a dark visor, in the interest of saftey I ware the dark visor to prevent being blinded by the sun! It hurts the sides of a riders head to ware sun glasses! Also if they say OK to ware sun glasses and it is then the argument of dark visors is BS IMO!
Common sense should rule I think! It's NOT ok to WEAR a dark visor all the time, such as in the rain when it darkens and obviously at night time! I chose to wear a dark visor on most days, but carry a clear visor with me 90% of the time.
Agree, I have about twenty visors just about all types, BUT like you I choose VERY dark on HOT sunny days and light tint daytime most of the summer, clear with a sun band (black tape) in the winter etc and anti fog in damp weather and so on, as you say I also have clip on visor bags for those long day summer ride outs when its bound to end up dark after a good ride out.. I only wish the LAW would see the sensible riders and let them alone Not that I have ever had a problem with the law and plod round me here, they are and always have been very fair with me Id love one of these IF any good.. and not so much dosh! http://e-tintproducts.com/
You can also lift a dark visor when going through tunnels and heavy tree coverage when all goes dark but there is F all you can do in sunglasses so IMO visors are much safer!
I like that.. hopefully it wont be too long till something like that is integrated into the main manufactures lids. How much are they? When you hit buy it now the link is broken. I also think common sense is key. I tried riding with sunglasses inside my lid years a go and it wasn't comfortable at all. One thing I did want to know is are any of the lids with flip down dark visors inside any good? Do you get reflections or distortion because of the distance between the two visors?
Hate the flip down internal visors and mates that have had them have all gone back to normal after a while 1) lids are not a good fit 2) visors ware out and keep falling down and so on, the electronic visor is $150 so prob around the £150 mark once tax and duty added and postage! A little too much for me and then you have to fit it your self!
btw ...glasses inside the helmet is very dangerus in the case of a crush ...glass might brake (even plasic glasses brakes)or frame might brake and get in to your eyes and face ...never wear glasses ....dont know the low around here but i wear always dark visor for the day and ichange to clear at night either with helmet ( i have 2) either i have the extra visor on my bag ...i mean its the logic thing to do right? as for the rain i never had problem with dark visor during the day rain ....
dark visor apart from night and its never been flagged by the local plod...mind you most of them wear dark visors too.
Have bought a lid with internal visor for road use. May not be perfect and it has hit my nose when I flicked it down to quick, but it does cover most bases. Lid was also relatively cheap and so if visor craps out after a year or two I can replace the lid and not be too much out of pocket. Also as I only have a kriega tank adapter I don't really have anywhere to carry a spare visor, used to use a waist bag but back protector and shrinking leathers have ruled that out On my old Arai I had a both clear and tinted visors and pinlocks so any of the following combinations were available to me. Clear visor + clear pinlock. (Legal) Clear Visor + tinted pinlock (Legal) Tinted Visor + clear pinlock (Not Legal) Tinted Visor + Tinted pinlock (Sleep aid ) If I did go out with a tinted visor and no clear spare I had the missus and standby in case of weather change.
During the summer I have an uber dark Visor, but I always carry a clear one just in case the weather changes. All other times a clear visor with pinlock. I have tried sunglasses under a clear visor and frankly I think they're dangerous. I remember once on a very bright but chilly day I when entering a junction, seeing traffic I slowed down then boom my sunglasses fogged up to the point I was riding blind, never ever again!
I always buy genuine visors,a friend has a XR1000 with an iridium non-genuine visor and the fit isn't the best. I have a dark tint for my XR-1100 and the same for my EXO1000, that one has a drop down sun visor and on really bright day it does come in useful. When the current wife decided to try a pillion ride and we bought all the gear (no idea) she wanted a dark tine like mine????? FFS another £40 spent for what may be 1/2 a mile and a taxi home! well one can live in hope eh..... View attachment 10018
I use a heavy tint one most of the time (I only ride when the weather is nice) and if I think it might change I take a clear one. I remember a story about a plod in Yorkshire who stopped a couple on a bike and confiscated their dark visors and left them to ride home with no visors.... how sensible! Tried a non-Arai iridium visor and the fit was sh1t. Also, I don't really get on with anti-mist inserts and still use Bob Heath visor spray, from the old days.
Interesting read guys, always considered a tinted myself. Stefanos, just picking up on your comments about not wearing glasses inside the helmet. I can see where your coming from 'I'm wearing my glasses' But seriously, how the heck are us blind gets supposed to see Moving on. I've tried contact lens, nightmare, tiny speck of dirt and that irritation city mate, plus when it's warm you need the vents open that drys the eyes out very quickly. The Arai suits the wearing of bins, more comfortable than any helmet I've experienced, my main glass is reactalight and this would be a no no with a tint on my lid as technically speaking, my view will be twice as dark? So I've opted for a pair of prescription glasses, and keep my clear visor on Don't mention eye surgery, has anyone seen that on YouTube? Scary. Just using google, and apparently it takes the average human eye 20-30 minutes to adjust from bright sun light to no sun light scenario.
Clear visors with pinlocks on all my helmets, but the Schuberth has a flip dark inner visor which works well (at the moment). I think the current law is rubbish, how a law can let you ride either without a visor or with sunglasses but stops you from using a tinted one is ridiculous.
Clear visor with fog shield all winter, and black visor all summer, always carry a clear, in case I get stuck at work late.
