Has anyone else noticed a slight knocking/pinking from their blade under heavy acceleration? I've noticed recently that in 2nd gear, if I'm running steadily at 30mph and then suddenly I open the throttle almost all the way, then right after the throaty roar starts I get a slight pinking. (At around 35mph). It disappears pretty quickly. Gone by 50 (But the acceleration is pretty fierce :)

This is with 95octane. Which being the recommended octane, shouldn't happen AFAIAC.

Tonite I dropped in 97octane from the BP. Tried again, and no pinking. Just a throaty roar and better acceleration (Which is obviously what it should get, but the pinking with 95 drops the performance)

So... The 95 octane requirement. False? The blade really requires 97 if you're going to open the throttle at 30? Or are Esso selling crap petrol that isn't meeting the advertised spec?

the blade has an anti knock sensor if im not wrong so it can run either
    95 or 97+
does it only do it under load?
tbh all I can hear under heavy acceleration is wind and my can :s

Yeah. Only under load. And not always even then. And you do have to do it in 2nd gear and from around 30... If you're doing > 35 it won't do it.

From a bit of subjective testing it's dependent on the petrol. Usually I use Esso, and it seems every second fill or so is like this. The BP 97 I put in it tonite doesn't do it...

It's due a new tyre soon (4500 miles), so might mention it to the dealer when it goes in for that and get new oil and filter at the same time (8k service interval seems a bit long for new oil to me. Especially since mine doesn't seem to use any).

only thing I can think of is the anti knock sensor is maybe coming into play
when you use the higher ron but when you use the standard stuff the bike
reverts to the standard firing timing which maybe makes a bit more noise.

I used to get that on my 04 and it did not seem to matter what RON I used, I read somewhere it was linked to using oil - which it did.

On the 12 tho, I don't get it, I would be going back to my dealer for them to look and maybe getting them to swap the Knock Sensor.

Yeah the pre 08 ones don't have an anti knock sensor

Doesn't happen with BP 95 octane either... Maybe Esso are just selling crap petrol. Will ask the garage.
