I am having one of those you tube moments!!

Both class acts bar none but which one is your favourite?

Mark Knopfler (try live aid 1985)

    Or

Pink floyd (comfortably numb pulse 1994)?

Was a time when I was completely blinded by Knopfler's virtuosity. In the Dire Straits days, mainly. His stuff is still outstanding, but it was his 15 minute solos I used to rave over. I don't pay him that much attention any more.

Dave Gilmour, on the other hand continues to beat you to death with his riffs. His stuff is more ageless, I think.

    Tough call Ken.

Both Floyd and Dire Straits are the most played on my “i” gadgets.

But for me David Gilmore judge nudges it for a number of reasons.

I have seen Floyd live twice, first back in the day which to honest my memory is slightly muddled due to a combination of alcohol and smoking the wrong kind of cigarette’s, neither of which numbed the pouring rain, the band played on regardless of the weather. The second at Live Aid which to my mind was the best live performance I think I have ever seen.

Non of the above detracts from the awesome skills of Knopfler, but its Gilmore’s solos that make the hairs on my arms stand up.

How about throwing a couple of other outside runners into the mix:

Phil Lynott: Specifically Parisienne Walkways which my oldest son plays perfectly. There is a funny story regarding his playing of that tune, or more to the point my trying to sing it.

Prince: I may not like all his music but he is still a master on his guitar. We were lucky enough to get tickets the last night at the 02 which was pretty good but what really turned me onto his guitar playing was at the after party in Indig02, we waited a couple of hours just in case he bothered to turn up, (there was no guarantee he would) but when he did, he played like I have never heard him play, he really rocked the place, his solo’s went on and on. When he was done it was getting light outside. Fantastic, simply fantastic.

I have too many guitar heroes to open it for wider debate. I'm not a good decision maker. Clapton, Page, Blackmore, Moore, Stevie Ray, Buckingham, Johnson, Cooder, Les Paul, James Taylor, Ronson, Lynne, Rea, Walsh, Oldfield, Richards, Becker and, of course, the legend of Peter Green. Bound to have missed some out. That's part of why I can never say 'He's the one!'

And yes, I did miss out Jeff Beck. I just never got him, I'm afraid.
