Ive been seriously thinking about moving out to Melbourne lately. Has anyone on here emigrated out there? Not sure how to go about it or wether ive got the bollocks to move to the other side of the world!

Ive got a trade so I think that'll help me getting in the country.

But more importantly how would I get my bikes over there? (and to phillip island!)

Any help/advise would be appreciated, I cant decide :)

Haven't gone myself, but my sons been there for six months now on a work visa.

Finding work is easy if you're prepared to graft at anything (so far he's sold ice creams on bondi beach, worked in a call centre for visa, and currently he's driving a bus).

It's pretty expensive compared to the UK at the moment, his weekend boozing has taken a hit.

With skype and FaceTime it doesn't feel like he's that far away really, and if he decides he wants to stay I don't really have a problem with it, it's a day on a plane and a pretty neat holiday for me I reckon.

I told him from the start to just go, and don't end up regretting not taking a chance.

If I was 20 years younger I'd be gone!!

To get the bike there, seems to be about £4k to £5k for sole use of a 20ft container, and 8-12 weeks for it to arrive, suppose you could move rest of your stuff with it as well, I reckon you'd get the contents of a three bed house in a 20.

Why not ride out there, then you just need one of these from Indonesia

Basically im just wondering what its like in Melbourne?. Obviously the weather is a big plus for me.

    1) Im not sure wether to send my CV off to a few car dealers first and see if theres any interest or just fly out there and chance it.

    2) Is there many good tracks in Victoria? Would love to try Phillip Island!

    3) I think Id proberly rent a place at first. What good areas are there in Melbourne? Or should I say what areas to avoid? Lol

think you'd be better doing some proper research first, visa's,cost of living etc,try speaking to people that actually know rather than a biking forum, sure there will be info on emigration on a .gov web page somewhere ;).

if you want to make a permanant move, just turning up an winging it isn't your best option,in fact you can't.

Thats just it I dont know anyone who lives out there. Worth an ask though but I havnt decided anything yet and wouldnt just move. Id need to save a bit more money if a were to move out and live comfortably. But your right I do need to research it fully.

right james what do you want to know?

have a look here - Australian Government Department of Immigration and Border Protection

you need to have an occupation that is on the skills list, if so than you can apply for a visa, don't expect it to be cheap (£5K or so )
You could also get sponsored by a company, but I would advise against it as if they fire you or you decide to leave you have 90 ( I think its 90, just changed from 28 ) days to leave the country or find another sponsor, which isn't easy.

Have a look here Moving to Australia - immigration, visas and expat forum PomsInOz, join up and introduce yourself with some questions. A lot on there will help you in the right direction

Australia is an expensive place to europe at the moment, but with the dollar coming down prices are evening out a bit.

Melbourne is a nice city, very metropolitan/european, I'm from sydney and have lived in melbourne, but will be moving to QLD in 2 years, I'm going for the warmer weather, sick to death of this crap european weather...... bikes and jetski's, that'll do just lovely for me ;)

Wouldn't do for me, I hate the heat if it gets above 25c, which is why we don't go abroad for our holidays :(
So Australia for me would not be a good thing :(
I guess I am just to conditioned to UK temps after all these years ;)
    Roll on the spring :D

philip island I would just fly in and rent one of there bikes, otherwise I wouldn't like melbourne either, give me the sunny coast or hervey bay, enough places to ride and jetski all year round :D :D

that's some temp there mate, but I bet if I post one of ours up then you will sh*t bricks with -20 not being an abnormal night in the winter here and -5 to 0 a normal day :D :D

that's exactly wehre I'll be looking to move in 2 years, although I would consider Hervey Bay if I found the right business or place to rent... All depends on a few things, but we haven't got a set place where to go. I'll be flying in about 4 weeks prior to the rest of the family and sorting out a car and having a look around first.
