My discs have been groaning and vibrating over the last few months, to the point where people look around when I pull up due to the noise. After seeing a thread here during the week about straightening them, I took them to Maidstone Motoliner yesterday. They questioned me about the condition of the calipers and freedom of piston movement etc. They then checked the wheel for run out, then the discs. They found both discs out by small amounts, 10 & 15 thou. They also noted the fact the the crossdrilled holes were cruded up, bascially a polite way of noting that I must be a lazy tool for not maintaining them better. Anyways, 1 hour later, they wheel was ready, discs now running true, holes and mounting buttons all cleaned and free from crud. They mentioned about the disc wear, but tbh as I have used them for 20K miles that comes with the territory I guess. On returning home, I measured them at 4mm and 3.85mm so about halfway from new to service limit. Set the wheel up on the bike, and finally no noise and no vibration. Good service from them, and will extend the life of the discs for another 10K or so. Certainly an option if you do not want to splash out on new discs. Also when the wheel was off, as I winter commute, there was a mass build up of crap behind the rad guard, took that off and cleaned up the rad, probably a 1/4 blocked by winter detritus, something to think about as its out of sight out of mind so to speak.
My ABS has the same problem, but I think they are close to the service limit so need replacing anyway. Just by chance I saw this video on keeping the bobbins clean, I think it's another job I will add to the monthly maintenance
10-15 thou is a small amount to be out, my disc is running out by about 5mm! Did they say there was a limit as to what can be repaired? If I spin the wheel when on the paddock stand you can see it running out of true.
Good find Slick, there is no doubt that is the cause of most warping issues. Also, for what it is worth, though it is only one persons opinion, I asked them at Motoliner about aftermarket discs, they say they see hundreds of discs coming through, and normally have no issues straightening OEM discs, but have issue with the likes of EBC etc, it appears the carrier is their main gripe.
5mm!!! must be clouting the inside of the caliper body, think that might be an over estimation matey Anyway, no I did not ask that, best phone them
No over estimation Kentblade. I noticed it at Oulton a few weeks back. As I wheeled the bike out of the garage the disc pushed the pads back so when I came to brake the lever went right back to the bars! Nearly knocked poor Marion down coming out of the garage!
Just watched the vid.........well I never knew that!! What a bloody great find! I've three sets of wheels for my trackbike and they'll all be getting that treatment!
That's one to try on my bike to see I can cure this judder under brakes its had for ages! There is not much left to change / check now
Just done this to my 04RR, they were all free and moved, cleaned them up though. Cheers for the heads up.
Just cleaned the buttons as per video, all of mine were absolutely solid. Needed quite a bit of force to free up but the amount of crud that came out! My Blade used to squeal like a piggy regardless if I'm applying the brakes or not. Not anymore!. Discs now float nicely! Just so you all know the best fit would be a M9 bolt but I used a M8.
