Hi all quick question the chain on my bike is covered in a thick gunky wax and nothing seems to strip the sodding stuff off it so can't clean chain or back wheel properly. I've tried muc off chain cleaner and auto glym de greaser nothing sodding works chain and back wheel still caked in it. Any ideas? I read something about brake cleaner somewhere would that work?
WD40 works a treat mate. If not that then dip a rag into the petrol tank and use that to get the stuff off. Just make sure you wash the bike afterwards, and give the wheel a wax if using petrol.
No probe mate. I had the same issue when I had my bike from new. It's a pain in the ass to get off otherwise.
Yeah tell me about it I was f'in and blind'in yesterday as I couldn't remove it from the rear wheel properly so in my mind set the bike was still dirty lol
+1 Paraffin first to remove the majority of the gunk then dedicated chain cleaner to finish off. I also use Vulcanet wipes on tough gunk on wheels and body work - like a knife through butter - absolutely safe on paint finishes. Baby wipes work well too!
WD40 or Paraffin if you have any. WD40 probably has the slight edge on cleaning but as others have said it's not supposed to be good for the o/x rings so if you're using WD then clean that off afterwards with the autoglym degreaser you've got. Dry the chain off and then apply whatever chain lube you use.
+1 Paraffin, or Gunk engine de-greaser. Finish with the proprietary cleaners. Lovely job on a sunny day. . .......... Mike.
That's what I use, a rag with a good amount of WD40 or white spirit or maybe petrol, use a glove and wrap it around the chain and run it up and down (engine off) it gets it real clean but gets very little if any into the links which is where you don't want it. Simples.
Furniture polish, That's a new un, I'll try that, I often raid the 'lady cupboard' for cleaning stuff, often works better than the proper gear! .............. ............. Mike.
I buy baby wipes just to clean the bike, great for removing bug and off your leathers too! I baby wipe bugs off then rewax after every ride, they are also great for cleaning wheels removes brake dust etc very well too without being harsh on the anodizing. I have never hosed the bike off with water in 3 years of ownership, at worst I use some car shampoo and a small sponge and ring the sponge out and just wipe over the bike, thats a wet as it ever gets
A bowl of hot water with car shampoo in it (I like Mer shampoo best) a bottle of Auto Glym Motorcycle Cleaner, a firm nail brush and an old toothbrush (or your wife's) and some elbow grease. Dry it of when it shines and lube it with Wurth High Performance Dry Chainlube.
Lol cheers guys the wd40 worked a treat on the wax stuck on the wheel I left the chain as is because bike is in for service next Saturday so will make dealer take it off they put it on there they can take it off lol. Bad news was the wd40 can decided to explode as I was spraying onto a cloth near the back of the bike it covered the rear tyre. I quickly countered it with degreaser and a thorough rinse with water seems to be ok I checked the surface but will take it easy tomorrow when tipping in. Nothing is ever bloody simple!
Sheeet mate, do be careful on that tyre. you have a sloppy cocktail there! take it easy bud, you'll be lucky if the dealer takes it off the chain. try mogul chain clean in they don't then wurth dry lube...its wicked....and clear!!
Yeah I use Wurth all the time great stuff not much flick either. Yeah I'll take it steady this thing eats tyres so I reckon I'll be done with those in another 1k miles lol
