Would it be OK to use a helicoil to sort a mirror hole on the bracket?

I've never used helicoils before so just want a simple drill, tap, insert job. The current thread is severely stripped at the entrance and I have just been using a longer bolt but want to fix it properly whilst I have all the fairings off.

Also it is a 6mm bolt so would a I need a 6mm helicoil kit?

I'll have a look in a mo. Got a kit in the garage too, i'll check which size it is.

Edit. Actually you may be able to do me a favour. Simon and i were comparing shafts on Monday ooerr. That is to say that my front axle sticks out n the bike's left side by a few mm. I've established that my bearings are shot, but i'd be interested to see or check how yours seats in the fork leg.

    Cheers.

Not a problem with the front wheel, got axle protector fitted but should be easy enough to get visibility. Pretty sure it was flush when I fitted the protector, but have had bearings replaced so not sure now.

You're in luck. The 2 smaller bolts that hold the mirror bracket to the fairing stay are indeed M6 and I have an M6 helicoil kit you can use. The drill bit hat comes in the kit is 6.3mm and then you Tap it for the helicoil, but you need to check that you can drill down at least 6mm in depth into the fairing stay as that's the depth of the helicoils themselves.
It's a nose off job, but if you want to do it up here then i can look at your axle as my bearings are out now so my bike's sat there wheel less.

Cheers for the offer but bit is up on the abba stand as all the plastics are off, so no lights or indicators. Thanks for checking, will probably get a kit myself as they look pretty cheap and I'm sure I will use it again in the future. Will try to remember to get some photos of the axle for you, but give me a nudge if I forget.
