I'm mightily pissed off. Should have been on my way to Northumbria an hour ago and bike won't start ! Last time out was Tuesday and the Saturday before and no problems. Today it turns over but that's all .....

Any ideas ? Surely not the battery after 16 months and 4,000 miles ??

Sounds almost like the battery hasn't got enough juice to kick it over.

Don't want to sound patronising but you haven't hit the emergency cut off switch by accident have you? I did this once and felt like a right nobber.

Have you tried popping it in gear and giving it a little rock back and forth?

Sounds maybe like the starter motor's spinning up but not engaging.

That's the first time I've smiled in over an hour. Trust me I checked that ! All the indications are the 16 month old (!) battery. Grrrrr

I'll be trying that in a bit Dave. What I'm not doing though is heading for a weekend away with a dodgy battery. The first fuel stop could be a problem ! What I don't understand is the battery lives on a trickle charger.

Whats the static voltage, and what does that drop to when you attempt to start it?

    ABS or non ABS?

    PS

Bike under 2 years old has Honda breakdown....if you don't have the tools or knowledge...use them

Gents. It's the battery for sure. It's been on the trickle charger for 90 mins and it then started. I switched her off and she was sluggish the second time of asking and refused. Third attempt was very lame. New battery for me in the morning. I don't know to be happy that it happened on my drive and not in the middle of nowhere over the weekend or to be sad that I'm sitting at home now when I should be up near Kielder Forest en route to Northumbria....

Is it ABS? is it a 2013 or a earlier model registered in 2013?

It's a non ABS RR-C. No alarm either (I rely on a heavy chain and ground anchor in the garage, and "gentle" pets for security !!). I'm still now 99% certain that the battery is goosed....

Below 6mph the ABS is active, but not calibrated - once you go over 6mph, the system does all its checks and self diagnosis etc.
When you drop down below 6mph, to park for example, the system cannot self diagnose itself. This causes a problem when you need to get the bike into a tight parking spot or awkward garage where you may go in and out a couple of times to get the angle right.
As the front and rear wheels are moving at different speeds when you turn the bars back and fourth, it tricks the system into thinking a wheel needs ABS pressure and therefore applies a little power where it thinks it needs it. This is not noticeable when you are moving it around.
However, even AFTER you cut the ignition, the system stays active and drains your batt in 30 mins that's why I asked what year oans ABS later models had a upgrade so your all good (relatively)

Honda OE batteries are shite, had mine for under a year (fitted to the bike for only 7 months) and flat after 2 weeks if bike is not used. Contacted Honda and they advise only guaranteed for 6 months, how pathetic:mad:

Going with sps recco of motobatt

You've probably tried already but when mine didn't start (also a 2013 not ABS) and just sounded like it was trying to turnover but not managing it was the fuse!

Changed it and it started 1st kick.

Weird - my battery lasted 50k + but did have a few challenges if I'd left it ages - once the bike was started it worked fine.
