Back in 05 when my bike was new I put a 8x6 on it. I was pulled and fined twice in consecutive weekends. Third weekend they pulled me again and basically told me to pull my finger out and get it sorted. No fine that time but changed over anyway.

Around 8 years later with same bike the standard plate got a crack. Changed it over to the 8x6 hanging in the garage and headed off without a second thought. Less than a mile later (I kid you not) I was pulled and they warned me about my plate. No fine this time but to be honest it's not worth the hassle up here. Just makes it easy for them!

No dealer details and no BS stamp says £30/60/100 :(

Sadly too many plod have no time for bikes beyond lecturing us and doing us for daft things like failing to display and small plates. Am sure they will soon have a clampdown on plates once the tax disc is obsolete later this year.

    .

Isn't it more to do with the ability of speed cameras/ANPR's being able to read them?

That's what they like you think, but more about money ;)
ANPR can read further away and at higher speed if the letters are bigger, but unless they are really tiny they can still read smaller, it's different fonts they throw them out

Its an intersting thought that if the font is not exactly visable does this make it difficult to prosecute with a camera. Is the carbon look ok with the correct font ? I was planning 8x6 with Carbon effect as I think the carbon effect font is legal even if the size is slightly smaller

Been pulled 3 times in the past 4 weeks. Two by VOSA 1 by Traffic.None of them even bothered with my plate which is 7x5.What bothers them down here is the spacing so if you have full size letters crammed into a tiny plate they book you.Because mine has 5 digits it is readable from a fair distance.VOSA tried doing me for no rear reflector. His computer monitor said MOT requirement only.Traffic was checking lights, tyres and insurance.Mine came up clear but he wanted to see what my bike was cos its a different colour:rolleyes:

Thought there was no requirement for a dealership or a postcode to be on a number plate anymore. Although I ain't got a b.s stamp

"It is not part of the MOT test to check that the registration plates
supplied on or after 1st September 2001display the BS AU 145d
marking, or the name and postcode of the registration plate
supplier. However, these markings are a legal requirement and
you will be committing an offence if they are not displayed."

Hmmm.... I have 7x6 plate and I was never stopped by the Police or had any trouble with MOT.
Well, during the last MOT check, they sticked that red reflective 'button' in the corner of the plate ;)

Never ran standard plates ever on a bike think mine are always 7x6 no MOT problems at all.
If the MOT bloke has a problem then he is obviously a twat and doesn't deserve your custom, cos he clearly aint a proper biker, No true biker wants to see that standard parachute spoiling the back end of a nice bike (Unless its a BMW GS then wagon plates to go onto them lol)

    I've always had small plates. 6 x 4; 6 x 2; 8 x 6 etc etc.

I've always thought of it as the easy way out for them if they pull me over. Let's be honest, you must be drawing attention to yourself to get pulled. Speeding, noisy can, wheelies etc etc

Much easier for the plod to fine you £60 for a small plate than prove you were doing 70 in a 60 - and overall, cheaper (and no points)

As long as they can get you for something (other than the other, harder to prove but more costly offence) they'll be happy.

"You were doing 90 in a 60 sonny jim"

    "No I wasn't"

"Yes you were, you were speeding"

    "No I wasn't. Honest"

"Well that plate is too small, have a £60 fine and no points"

"Thank you officer, that's a bargain!"

Think of it as "insurance" :D
