I know this has probably been covered and so just wanted to summaries what i am about to do on my 1000rr5. i intend to change the front sprocket to 15 teeth (-1) and rear sprocket 44T (+2). I was just wondering what effect this would have on cornering. At the moment the bike is smooth and without drama's going in and out of corners. Will this change mod change the behaviour and make it become more pokey or twitchy when putting the power down? I've also read that some change the to a 520 (i dont know what my stock is) but is this necessary. Has anyone got any recommendations of what to buy and from where or is it simply a ebay jobby. I am also contemplating doing the mod myself, is this a good idea? or shall i let a garage handle it. I have a rear paddock stand but never removed a bike wheel. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
On my previous blade (RR4) and the current one (2009), I have the setup you are considering i.e. -1/+2. The bike will accelarate better, but don't expect a 'drama' or a 'twitchy beast' out of the corners unless you whack the throttle full-open after just passing the apex So, to sum up, go for it, and enjoy one of the cheapest but most effective mods As for the comversion to 520 (the standard is 530), well it is all about the reduction of the rotating mass of the chain. If you also swap the steel sprockets for aluminium, you will lose about 1kg... so, again if you plan trackday racing, do consider the 530->520 conversion. I have a 520 chain (remember to pick a 520 conversion sprockets!) and I'm happy with it, but I wouldn't be able to tell the difference vs. 530 alone i.e. without changing the sprockets.
Thanks for assurance, i have also been told the front will want to come up all the time and i will be up and down the gears more. The gears i dont mind too much as i have come on to a blade from a 600 ninja and so i can't imagine i will be changing as much as i was on the 600 even with the change to the sprockets. I have been recommended the Rathnal sprockets.
Well, if your riding style is whacking the throttle full open 'all the time', than it will wheelie 'all the time' I do trackdays and never had a problem while accelerating hard out of the corners. Yeah, I have Renthal sprockets fitted. Recommeded.
It sounds like you ride harder than i do. I do enjoy trying to ride smooth with balanced acceleration out of the corners. Always mindful of giving it too much but the blade hasn't really been troubled with anything i have asked of her. So adding a little more accelaration should be fun.
What do I gain and lose by moving to 520 tsubaki chain? Bearing in mind my riding is,in the main, countryside weekend riding.
If you are not planning trackdays (however you should definitely try at least once), keep the standard 530. I don't believe you would notice the difference vs. 520
I will try 520 next year, as planning loads of track days, I also have the rr5 on-1 and +2 abut think you will find plus 2 on rear is 42 and and not 44? That is for 06 and later models Front will come up more, and even more so if you got 44 on rear lol, Max speed will be less and fuel comp will go down
