Yes and no. You can change the exhausts, but there is one restriction. The new exhaust must be European street legal. The exhaust must have an E-number. The authorization must be appropriate for the motorcycle. But there is no need to carry a special permission for the exhaust with you. In practice, no one cares about. From time to time, however, the police do checks. Especially at the popular motorcycle routes in the Eifel, around the ring. It is important that the limits of the noises are not exceeded. In the German registration papers stationary noise is noted. For example 84 dbC. There is a measurement tolerance of 5 dbC. In this case, the exhaust should not be louder than 89 dbC. If the exhaust is louder, you have to pay a fine. In extreme cases, the police can prohibit the ride. In the case of a sport exhaust without E-mark the police makes problems and prohibits the onward journey. All this only applies to local motorcyclists with German registration papers! Motorcyclists from the UK or the Netherlands have different registration papers and rules. Hello and welcome Ramsey, I noticed when I was based at RAF Bruggen (flugplatz Elmpt), near Monchengladbach twenty years ago that whenever we used to go out riding down to the Mosel etc, the local riders always seemed to leave the exhaust system standard. I asked a local Man and he explained German Police had a zero tolerance to race exhaust systems and noise pollution. Since then you can buy replacement exhaust systems with removable baffles etc. Saying that lots of Harley Davidson riders with noisey exhausts who seemed to get away with it.
Yeah ... the EU has set us free. Since the early years of the 21st century, the German rules are converted into European law. These are less strict. One of the few advantages from Brussels. BTW: I understand the inhabitants of the Eifel, Black Forest and the Sauerland. We love the sound of our machines. We hear the sound of the bikes for a few hours. People in the motorcycle regions have to listen it 24 hr. a day, almost 365 days a year. In many areas there are now closed roads. I don't know the Situation in the UK. Perhaps the inhabitants of densely populated areas feel the same. In my opinion, prefer something less sound for free roads. Not too little sound, but not what we call in German "Bruellrohre" (howler pipes?). Nevertheless, I like the Bodis or the Akrapovic exhaust systems with EU approval. Maybe I mount the Bodis/Akrapovic later on my SC59. But with inserted DB killer
