£580 fine and 6 points for doing 99 in a 60. On top of the 3 points I had gained a month earlier. Made me unable to insure a bike for a year, but didnt stop me riding. This was back in the day when you could get away with riding without Insurance, tax and MOT. No bad going for an Aprillia RS125R. (Same bike got my mate banned 6 weeks after I sold it to him).

In my younger days I was caught doing 75mph on a 40 mph dual carrigeway. I was 21 and driving a Lotus Elan, the copper gave me a harsh telling off, and warned me that if I was caught again I would have the 'book thrown at me'

    In Germany:

    Inside an urban area

    up to 10 km/h = 15 EUR
    11 up to 15 km/h = 25 EUR
    16 up to 20 km/h = 35 EUR
    21 up to 25 km/h = 80 EUR and 1 points from 8
    26 up to 30 km/h = 100 EUR and 1 points from 8
    31 up to 40 km/h = 160 EUR, 2 points from 8 and 1 month driving ban
    41 up to 50 km/h = 200 EUR, 2 points from 8 and 1 month driving ban
    51 up to 60 km/h = 280 EUR, 2 points from 8 and 2 month driving ban
    61 up to 70 km/h = 480 EUR, 2 points from 8 and 3 month driving ban
    over 70 km/h = 680 EUR, 2 points from 8 and 3 month driving ban

    Outside an urban area

    up to 10 km / h = 10 EUR
    11 up to 15 km / h = 20 EUR
    16 up to 20km / h = 30 EUR
    21 up to 25 km / h = 70 EUR and 1 points from 8
    26 up to 30 km / h = 80 EUR and 1 points from 8
    31 up to 40 km / h = 120 EUR and 1 Points from 8
    41 up to 50 km / h = 160 EUR, 2 Points from 8 and 1 month driving ban
    51 up to 60 km / h = 240 EUR, 2 Points from 8 and 1 month driving ban
    61 up to 70 km / h = 440 EUR, 2 Points from 8 and 2 months driving ban
    over 70 km / h = 600 EUR, 2 points from 8 and 3 months driving ban

    Measuring tolerance

    under 100 km / h = 3 km minus
    over 100 km / h = 3 % minus

With 8 or more points the driver's license is revoked. Every 2.5 years without traffic violations is 1 point degraded.

Whether traffic violations are reported by Germany to the UK, I do not know. In Germany, the penalties are reasonably humane. Very extreme it is in Norway and Switzerland!

2014 I was caught with 94 to 50 outside an urban area. Consequence: In February 2015, one month driving ban, 160 € fine and 2 points.

I got stopped at USK on the A449 after doing 140 odd MPH, by a police car with a singe cop, when he pulled in front and made me stop my heart almost stopped he said hello Rob good to see you following our speed laws etc after a conversation about where I was going etc and checking the bike over he just let me go, why would he do this? camera not working? or as he was on his own?

I sure felt lucky and shaky legged after.

About 6 months ago I was followed by one of those big mini-bus/riot van things the police use, two coppers in it.
I was driving my old white Transit, usual rust box, looks like a Gypsy van but completely legal, taking my dogs out for their afternoon run about at the park.

Anyway driving along the dual carriageway which has a 50mph limit, I always sit in the outside lane as there are loads of on and off ramps so it easier than keep changing lanes to avoid joining and leaving cars, so I overtook said plod, I was doing a steady 55-57mph just keeping up with the flow of traffic.

Sure enough police van pulls out and drops in behind me, so I just keep a steady pace, drops into the left hand lane as the traffic cleared passing the retail park, maybe plod is going to over take, but nope..drops in behind.

Next slip road I pulls back out, using all the correct signalling but keeping the speed constant, to let cars join the carriageway, police still on my tail.
By this time I know I'm going to get a tug as they've had enough time to PNC the reg etc
Sure enough, just after the next slip road, on goes the blues and twos, but there is nowhere feasable for me to stop, no hard shoulder etc and it would have caused a massive traffic jam.

So I just carried on, the copper must have realised that asking me to stop where they put the lights on was utter stupity so they switched them off and just followed me.

About half a mile further on there was a big layby, so I indicated and pulled inand stopped and they followed, then put the blues and siren back on, which was a bit pointless as I was out of my van and walking towards them.

Anyway I got the usual, "your van sir ?", "do you know why we've stopped you?"

No constable, I didn't realise you had stopped me, but why do you think you've stopped me.

Meanwhile his mate is circling the van doing the usual tyre check, gets to the front and see's 5 very large Akita's going nuts through the screen.

He come's back and joins his mate in the conversation, with the background sound of dogs barking, "well sir we followed you for a while and you were speeding"

"Really !! how fast do you think I was going officer ?"

"60mph sir and the limit is 50"

"Actually officer I was doing between 55-57 which was verified by the GPS sat nav speedo as well as the fitted speedo." so I didn't deny being over the limit, which kind of threw them a curve ball.

"According to our speedo it was 60, we can show you the video"

"Of course the speed detection device you're quoting is an APCO and home office approved one that's in calibration and you have the calibration certificate with you I take it".. that got him stumped.
he looked at his mate, who had seen the dogs, who shook his head.

"look sir we just saw that you were slightly over the limit and decided to have a little friendly chat about keeping the speed down where possible"..

"Well thank you officer for taking the time to keep me safe, I was merely keeping up with the traffic flow you know, I wasn't driving inconsiderately or in an unsafe manner as far as I was aware"

"No sir, your driving was ok, just a little fast, well we'll let you get on your way sir"

"Thank you officers, I appreciate you making the effort, have a nice day"

Got back in my van with a smug grin and drove off :-D

I fought a speeding ticket a few years ago, proved that the speed reading was wrong, but the magistrates came down on the side of the police as I never had an accredited boffin to back me up, even though they agreed that the police evidence was flawed.
During that time I did loads of reading up on traffic law and speeding offences and what the police can legally use to prove their case, types of kit etc.
So I knew that van had no way of providing admissible evidence ;)

It's the sort of stuff I wish I knew but would never get around to reading up about.

2 years ago, 54 in a 40 dual carriageway Princess Parkway south manchester, 09:10 - van hidden behind motorway sign, Road goes from 40 to 50 to 70 in space of 1 mile, they sit just before the 50 change. THere is no pavement, cycle lane or turning.
    I got SP30 and usual £50 fee.

What annoys me is that I cannot believe that location has the highest accident rate to warrant the van sitting there, its just easy pickings. Why not park it up near a school, shops, library or similar where there are pedestrians, kids, OAP's etc. where there is / maybe a speeding safety issue.

I was 1 mph too high for the speed course!

Well as we are sharing ;)

    Over many years of driving……

    1st 3 points - in own car….. 38 in a 30…. radar gun… officer was nice enough about it … fair cop

2nd 3 points – in company van….. 55 in a 40 (dual carriageway)….. followed by traffic cops then pulled over…. they were dicks about it as while being booked a woman approached the car in a frantic state (her kid had gone missing)…. but they are traffic and not interested… got to fine me for my terrible behaviour not worry about a missing toddler…

3rd 3 points – in wife’s car (getting older now)…. running a red light…. It wasn’t red it was amber and when I pulled over to let the blue lighted van pass I was totally confused when it pulled in behind me….. officer’s were in side street and claimed I ran a red light I didn’t and made that clear…. I made a lot of thing clear during the next hour of search’s (me and car) and sitting in back of their van and things getting out of hand…. eventually left to go on my way with claims of reports being sent to the Procurator Fiscal etc….. never heard anything more about it….

4th 3 point – in own car….. 52 in a 40 (on approach to on ramp of M6 with no hazards about)…. not pleased but the officers were nice enough and we chatted a while… fair cop but where was the danger there!!!!

5th 3 points – in own car – officers not happy with an overtaking manoeuvre and pulled me over to charge me with dangerous driving and take my licence….. ffs…… ended with a “Driving without due care and attention” which was fair…. was an error on my part but nowhere near the original charge they wanted to give me….. they spent a lot of time explaining advanced driving and Roadcraft… didn’t have the heart to tell them I’ve done all that… best be humble and polite and take what’s coming (well so long as it’s only the 3 points)

6th…..didn’t happen…. on bike….. unmarked car….. blue lights suddenly light up as I went by then in the opposite direction and saw them turn round in my mirror’s……. well if they thought I was speeding they should have tried harder to let me know…… only ever saw the lights fade in the distance…. maybe they were responding to something else!
So after 30yrs of driving I’v have had 15 points (currently 3 on licence) - only once have the points been deserved in relating to doing something that was a safety concern.

My biggest issue with speeding is that the speed traps are always in the wrong place….. why not a schools…. busy pedestrian areas…. !!!!
