Cycling is fantastic if you don't like the gym mate. I sometimes spend up to 2 hours in the gym but have done the odd 3 hour session. If you can motivate yourself to go to the gym then half the battle is won as like you i get bored easily but once there i do enjoy myself. Running can put a lot of unwanted stress on joints so do less and less and concentrate on cycling, the crosstrainer and stairs followed by a little tread mill work. By doing all in one session it breaks the time up and becomes less boring... Im concentrating on stamina and weight reduction at this time...
I do a lot of mountain biking through the year which I find helps the legs and core too, plus I enjoy it so it doesn't feel like exercise!
Cycle up hills, then some more hills, and then even more hills. Also include gym work and running. This is based on what I have seen a top 6 BSB rider tweeting over the past few months.
Mountain/off road biking is good for fitness and damn good fun too, wish I had time to do more though
Nice one Matt, you will have the time of your life! It will honestly be the best thing you will ever do. Good luck and keep us posted on how you get on.

I had a break from track riding for approx 2 yrs, i got back on track and was knackered all the time, hammered the gym, cycled, worked on strength in arms, legs, core. it helped. but by far the best thing that i did was get more time in the seat. riding your bike more (like you would on track, not just on the road) that was far better for me, your body uses those specific muscles and you get used to the level of effort you need to put in.
