the printers will say which work with airprint (apples name I think for wireless printing from i devices)

There is huge choice - what are printing, do you need A3 , photo quality printing on glossy paper , how much printing a day / week / month

Ink is the killer cost - so you may want continual ink supply - not all printers have these available

Sorry for a billion questions but a load more info needed to help suggest one - do you also need it to scan / copy ?

To be able to photocopy and scan. Print from a Dell laptop and print from i phones. Not a lot of printing per week ,info from the internet on holidays etc. Mainly A4 size.

Glad you asked the question Great Guy as I am also thinking about a new printer .I bought an Epson last year and its perhaps the biggest load of crap I have ever bought .
A mate has just bought an HP printer and likes it ( not sure of the model) .
I have had two Epson and the latest one grabs to paper that aggressive that it gets mangled and as such it's only fit for a bonfire.

For inkjets I tend to stick with Canon. Wife has had an all in one Canon Pixma jobbie for about 3 years which has wifi you can use for scanning and printing. Don't know if the new ones do crApple stuff though as we don't have/won't any of their kit in the house.

If your not printing photos I'd go for a colour laser printer, more economical. I've the best of both worlds, ink jet for photos, laser for documents etc.
    Ink jet is a Epson A3 2100.
Laser is wireless Samsung CLP325W, little old now but good value.
Looking at this for replacement as cartridges are about 40 notes.

I have had HP's for years, the last Office Jet cost me 99p from eBay, but I did buy a new one of these last year, works very well and does all you want - oh and I saved you £50 :D

That could well be the one to go for. I bought an HP Officejet Pro 8600 2 years ago which is probably the big brother of the 5742. prints wirelessly from iphone, ipad, android phone , laptop etc. I'd go HP again in an instant.

Bear in mind that inkjets are by far the most expensive type of printer in terms of running costs (inks). Usually low yield and inks can be pricey. Also unless you use the printer regularly (more than once a week), your ink nozzles will dry up (ooer), meaning you'll get poor results and use even more ink due to increased cleaning cycles. I know this from experience.

You'de be better with a laser or even gel ink printer. They're normally a bit more pricey and the consumables are more expensive to buy, but last a hell of a lot longer! We bought a decent Dell wireless gel ink printer and it's been absolutely brilliant. It's Ok with not been used for weeks, always gives great results and compatible carts are about £30 a set. We've had the printer now for about 2 years and I'm only on my 2nd set of carts. I don't think it's iDevice compliant tho, although I can print to it from my Android phone and tablet.

I think this was the one we bought - Dell C1760NW Wireless Colour Laser Printer - Ebuyer

We have just purchased in the last couple of weeks a HP Officejet Pro 8620. Its really easy to set up the wireless via PC, Apple, Android, phone etc. It prints (even duplex) scans, faxes and photocopies. Does everything we want from a printer. I cant seem to find the receipt but I think it was about £179.99. All in all a fantastic printer and really quick.

    With Freedom here.

We have a an HP Officejet Pro 8500A which is probably 3 years old now, not missed a beat and does all that's stated above.

Cost us £200 so obviously cheaper nowadays and a more updated unit.

It's set up as a wireless network on it's todd so owt with a wireless function can print to it

I forgot to mention, as Sinewave says you set it up as a wireless network meaning you can also define an email address to the printer and then print anything from anywhere in the world. Pretty cool eh.
