I've been suffering a lot of false neutrals on my Blade. Nearly all coming down from 5th-4th or 3rd. Todays ending in a parting of ways at Paddock Hill. I noticed at Cartagena that I have play in the output shaft and not just in and out. It was suggested to me that the gearbox needed shimming to remove the excessive play. Never worked on a gearbox so not something I would have any idea of how to do. I'm sure I can remove the gearbox but any suggestions on who to send it to and how much it might cost?

With the 04-07 bikes its a cassette type gearbox, making it a lot easier and cheaper to replace.

In all honesty I would change the lot and keep the 1 you have for spares.

relatively easy to remove, just side case, clutch basket then it's just behind there, comes out in 1 unit rather than seperate sets of shafts/gears.

as for the play,if theres play up+down, then it's the bearing in the engine case, regardess if the box is knackered,if it moves it's due to the bearing.you will get some in/out movement.theres a retaining tab at the end of the input shaft,if this has gotten bent then it will more excessive (i.e. pushing the linkage knuckle on too hard,or forcing it).for me,this is what i'd be looking at,also that your gear shift rod+input shaft knuckle are at 90deg to each other, other wise it can make it harder to get a positive gear change.is itonbly on downshifts and not upshifts? you running race shift?

cassestte box aint any cheaper, just easier.

Hmm that's an idea. I have got a m8 who has a couple of Blade engines for the 05. How much would you expect to pay for a 2nd hand gearbox?

Yeah I run race shift. The fixing point from the gear select shaft is at 90 degrees. It wasn't when I bought the bike but when I had the engine out over winter I fixed that when I put back in. Hoped that would help fix the problem but I still had a couple of false neutrals in Cartagena and then the one today at Brands.

well if it wasn't at 90 before hand, they can be hard to get on the shaft (basically the gap should line up with the little dot) and some people force them on,bending the little tab inside the gearbox, this can cause excessive in/out movement, but not up down.

I had to replace my 05 gearbox a couple of years ago, most places charge about 250 for them which is what I paid. 06/07 won't fit tho so don't make that mistake it was something to do with the main shaft size.
I have my old gear box which lost 2 teeth from 4th which I would sell a lot cheaper if it's something you could use
