After having trouble changing gear from 3rd into 4th at Donington Park last weekend. I thought I'd better start to strip it down and have a look at the gearbox. Ready for the next round at Brands Hatch in June. I ran out of time yesterday before the workshop doors closed and I got locked inside. But after taking the clutch out. I found some of the plates blue. Also the chain for the oil pump was very slack and has been hitting the casing. So I'll knock the gearbox out on Tuesday now. I forgot about the bank holiday and can't get to the bike now
Damn, the long weekend would have been ideal for fettling. Isn't there an issue with tensioners on these? Does it just need a new one, assuming the chain is ok.
you will get some bluing on the steels,usually around the outside,as long as they aren't to bad they will be fine,but be good idea to measure the pack thickness now to make sure it's not getting towards the lower limit of it's tolerance. just make sure,if you take it apart,you put the 2 thicker friction plates in 1st+last.
Yep will be a long weekend. There's no tensioner on this chain Gary. I ran out of time yesterday so will measure them Tuesday. I've kept the plates in the right order as they came out but never knew that about the 1st and last.
I had my gearbox out last week, my chain was the same but when you come to put it back on you're realise why it's like that, any more tought and you wouldn't be able to get it back on, I was too worried bout mine but when I slid it back on I checked if i could pull it off the sprockets but was happy it couldn't. When engine running it will prob go tought If your worried it would be worth fitting a new one while your in there prob not much from Honda Also you should renew the clutch nut cost me about £5 from Honda
It's how it's been hitting the casing though. That's got to be too much slack surely? There's a bolt on the lower sprocket. I was thinking you undo that and slide both top and bottom off.
Are you sure marks are from the chain? I'm not sure which marks u mean? I did have a mark on engine casin as you will see in my thread but there was no explanation for it and may of been there from new. Taking bolt out of bottom sprocket is risky cos u could drop bolt sprocket or washers into sump, also u would need to torque it back up, I did mine by the Haynes manual and here's a pic of that step you're at...
Finally took the box out. I haven't found anything obvious with the gears and there's no metal in the oil. But the bearing for the selector is very notchy. Have a look see what you think. Also when I took the gearbox out this fell out. Any ideas where it's come from?
