hi bought an aftermarket did chain tool got it this morning , pushed chain links out fine , put new chain side plate on fine , but it just keeps spinning inside the soft chain link and not flareing them out , so has anybody got any ideas to sort the links , thanks.

you sure your using the correct die?,yu could always just peen it over with hammer if all else fails.

the hollow pins usually flare out for me though using the correct pin

yer I'm using the only pin I got with it , its one of the did style km500r not original 20160704_131757.jpg , but looking at the pin it looks flat and not round if you know what I mean.

Unfortunately the metal used in some of the DID copy riveters are too soft. One solution I found was to use an old bearing from the headstock bearing. First drill a locating hole in the pin, the drill bit should be slightly smaller that the bearing then press it in the hole. The bearing will be super hard so should not wear or deform.

This actually provides a very neat flare, you just need to be extra careful not to over flare or over press the side plate.

I've just bought a genuine did rivet pin to use with my copy tool, looks much better quality and should flare the pin rather than crush it.

I ordered one and a new chain link as the copy tool pressed the link on nicely but when trying to flare the pins it seemed to crush them and pressed the chain tighter causing the rubber x rings to squish out. Hopefully this will work as intended.

Just fitted my chain today and even the did rivet pin seems to have worn! Chain seems to be on ok and pins flared nicely although I didn't tighten it all the way up as per instructions as I thought the plate was getting a bit tight against the x rings.
