I use the Garmin 660lm, no issues with it and Garmin Basecamp is easy to use.

Hi mate - it's a bit like Oasis vs. Blur. Everyone will have a preference and will normally stick with it, not swapping. I have a few Tomtoms in cars (both built-in and portable) and so I went for Tomtom Rider 400 when it came to getting one for the bike.

I like it and used it many times for decent rides (e.g. through Wales). Like the Garmin you can also plan your ride in detail on a PC/laptop and download it to the device. I also just like riding out, getting lost and then when I've had enough, let it take me back home.

Hopefully someone will reply who has had both and can give a better balanced view.

I've got the zumo 590lm. Had the 550 before that, 2820 before that and gps v before that, so you could say I'm a garmin man.
The 590 has windy roads etc and I believe ( not used this feature yet ) you can put in your preferred mileage and it will plan a route for you.
When I used it for a trip to Italy earlier in the year I was well impressed with it ( big step forward from the 550).
The problem is you end up following the sat nav and haven't a clue where you've been.

I have the Garmin 340LM, has served me for 2 tours so far and performed brilliantly. That's all I can say!

I didn't want the expense of buying a satnav as wasn't sure how much use it would get. Instead I opted for copilot on my iPhone. Very easy to use and allows you to plan journeys.

To be honest I don't think you can go wrong with either a garmin or tomtom satnav

I've got a tomtom rider 400, I swap it between fireblade and GS. You can hide a cable under the tank cover easily and the fork stem bolt ball mounts are brilliant.

Think there isn't much between tomtom or garmin, choose the best deal or the one you like the look of or prefer the interface on.

We don't half get ripped off with motorbike specific sat navs. I know theyre waterproof and ruggerdised but 2 or 3 times as dear as a car specific one?

Only Garmin is compatible with Mac OS X (i.e. Apple computers / laptops).

Do the Garmins show Petrol Stations on your route ?

It is a handy feature on the Tomtom 400, and you can do a Petrol Station near me search - that has been a big help, especially on a sportsbike with a 17.5 litre tank when you are away from home.

The newer Garmins have an "up ahead" feature where you decide what you want shown ( fuel, restaurants, hotels etc ) and also have an active fuel feature where you put in your tank capacity, fuel range etc and it will then give you your fuel stops for the entire trip.

Absolutely magic. I always liked the handling of the blade and the BMW doesn't disappoint either but the brakes on it are just so much better than the Honda abs, more stopping power and feel. And the standard exhaust doesn't suck either lol

I would recommend getting something recent, rather than cheaper older models, because of the increase in processing power of the current generation - whether Garmin or Tomtom. The old models were fine if you were riding a bicycle or an elephant in terms of their refresh speed !

I suspect the current Garmins are on a par with the current Tomtoms - they will keep up when you are trying to work out your exit route at some complicated junction - rather than letting you know, 5 seconds later, that you have taken the wrong road !

The Tomtom 400, as a unit is a very fast capable unit with a great display, road numbers, junctions, which road to take - all great stuff. The mapping is good, and the advance warning of petrol stations is a top feature. Your places that you have loaded show on the screen at all zoom levels - so you can see them on a Europe Wide screen right down to the street corner and never have to change to another screen.

    Things I do not like:
Limited information compared to Garmins - like Hotels and points of interest - I have to carry a separate Garmin E-Trex with all that stuff on.
Not Mac compatible - but Garmin have excellent Road Trip and Base Camp software to load things onto the Garmin.

Maybe someone with a Garmin can advise if there is anything they do not like about it.

I think this system is fantastic and love how you've got the mount permanently wired into what I assume is the ignition, so just putting the satnav in the mount starts it charging.

Could I ask for details of everything you bought please? The exact mount system and ball system. Basically so I can go out and buy the entire lot, take it to a dealer and have them set it up just like yours?

    Thanks so much.
