hya.... i just finished up an oil and filter change and was a bit surprised how dark the old oil came out...
this was the oil i poored in at 1000km (600 mile) first service and the bike has done another 6000kms thereafter.
i decided to refresh now causse i have a small tour coming up and still had a can of oil and fitler laying here...
i use motul 5100 10w40 (as i always do with all bikes) and i cant recall it coming out so dark coloured...
do these motors run so hot?
oil usage is non excisting and i have no clues suggesting anything is wrong...
i bought the bike new in late 2016 and was planning on swapping over to a full synthetic motul but i wanted to use up the remaining oil here first so...
i do ride in germany quite often where it does get a proper run for its money on the autobahn so maybe thats the reason the oil is so dark ?
wierd thing is the oil in my sp1 always stayed quite clear with similar usage and the same oil....

They are supposed to have fully syn. oil ... so it is likely the 5100 semi-synth is breaking down earlier than scheduled service intervals.

Simple answer is either put better oil in it or change the 5100 more often. :)

    right....thats what i figured aswell...ty...
like said i had a full can of semi-synth (5100) still sitting here wich seemed like a waste and i dont want to put full synth oil in too early aswell causse i feel its best to do the first 10k (kms) or so on a semi oil with the rings in mind...
maybe its overly carefull but it beats feeling sorry if i end up with an oil burner causse of poorly ran in bores....
furthermore i tend to swap oil once a year wich in my case is around 10k kms wich is way before the scheduled interval....

as ODC said it is best to use FS. Don't penny pinch on this.
No doubt 5100 is a good oil and I don't see why it would turn your engine into an oil burner, nevertheless, I wouldn't use it.
you can always use it on door hinges, bicycle ....;)

i didnt say semi synthetic oil turns my engine into an oil burner.
i said swapping to full synth too soon might causse oil consumption due to not properly running in of the piston rings...

to be honest by the way, i dont feel these motors are gonna last forever like some previous honda bikes.
the rc51 i owned did 90 000 miles until i sold it and is still running...
i owned a vfr in the past with close to 110 000 miles on the speedo and ran like a new one still.
the sc59 model blade i somehow feel wont last that long without major repairs...
u never hear of really high mileage 08-onwards blades...i only hear of oil consumption, failing cranks and clutch baskets and god knows what else..
to me it dont matter,i am already looking into finding an allroad (africa twin) to use for longer trips so next year the miles i do on the blade will me much less.
maybe i am wrong with what i am saying but somehow the motor doesnt feel as solid as the sp1 twin motor i had.
it is hard to put a finger on it but its just a feeling i get when i ride it tho it does nothing wrong to confirm that feeling...

It's a common misconception that oil turning black quickly is a bad thing.

It simply means that the oil has good retention properties which enables it to hold carbon deposits in suspension until you change it again.

Oils that turn black quickly are often the best.

Honda use the HP4 semi synthetic in their service kits. I ran synthetic in my 09 and found that I was needing to change it more often than the semi.

are u talking about 08-up models?
if so that is reassuring,i havent found any high mileage sc59 sofar.
the previous model i have and hear less problems about but maybe i am completely wrong with all this....

MY view is that to more power you squeeze out, the more you stress the engine. If longevity is not an issue (racing, rich parents....) then fine but otherwise you need to choose carefully.
I bought my RR8 in exchange for a VFR. Great bike and happy with it except, I wanted and extra 30~40 hp and 30~40kg less weight.
For me 150 hp for fast road use and sub 200kg is ideal but unfortunately, at the time RR8 became my best option and I don't regret it. Sure it kills my clutch wrist but I really enjoy the handling, torque and performance.
Unfortunately with road conditions taking a dive since 2008, I ended up buying a yan xtr660 as my second bike. adventure bike, light and only 47hp and long travel suspension.
I would not buy a bike with more power than RR8 for road only use. Don't see the point of having big numbers then expecting the electronics to ride it for you and turn the bing numbers into small ones:)
my RR8 came with a sticker on the side saying use castrol FS xxx oil. I don't know if the new ones have such labels.
One last point, be wary of adventure bike riding positions, you sit upright but end up curving the upper body I find this becomes uncomfortable after a while
