i know most lids have a time period to be used in but does anyone know if there is a mileage number to change it by?.
my lid is only 20 months old and i have done 24k in it so was thinking about servicing it and keeping it until the summer or the end of next year if i can get away with it or start looking for a replacement.
its still clean inside and not sweaty if that makes a difference, not been dropped but a few small stone chips

    cheers

I am not sure, but logic suggests that that the more intense hot and cold weathers would affect the shell. Given our climate I don't think there'd be a problem.

For peace of mind though, why not shoot off an email to the manufacturer's customer service?

Your never going to get anything other than a vague guideline from a manufacturer, they are too scared of litigation.
Bearing in mind Arai will replace parts until it’s 5 years old, there’s a guide IMO.

But at 20 months and 24k miles its just a baby, and until yer ears can’t stopping it spinning around yer melon at speed it’s fine.

    There is no science involved.

May I suggest that you read all 4 parts of my blog/article at

    http://www.motorcycledirect.co.uk/m...why-we-wear-helmets-and-how-they-are-made.php

    http://www.motorcycledirect.co.uk/m...-should-I-buy-and-how-much-should-I-spend.php

    http://www.motorcycledirect.co.uk/motorcycle-direct-club/blog064-keep-your-lid-on-part3.php

    http://www.motorcycledirect.co.uk/motorcycle-direct-club/blog066-looking-after-your-lid.php

It should answer your questions, in particular part 4 which deals with the life of a helmet.

Moto-Direct (the importer for both Arai and AGV) have replaced parts on helmets that are over 16 years old (which is another story which I will share with you sometime) but the bottom line is that a lot of the stories you hear about helmets are myth.

Anyway, have a read, you may find it useful or helpful.

Got to agree with Tony's blog in Part 4

I am very careful who I let touch my helmet, particularly on the family front, bit more liberal with my friends, but still choosy.......couldn't agree more with that advice.

I’ve had mine for years. It’s been down the road around 15 times, got a few hairline cracks in it, chips galore and chunks missing.... been repainted with Dulux gloss black woodwork paint and falls off my bike every time I leave it on the seat.
    Still fits perfect.

Just needs a visor and you could sell it on here. Will be a fine addition to the bent wheel and cracked fairings!:)

The obvious answer is that e helmet lasts as long as you like the pretty colour scheme of the one that you have, and it should be replaced when you see a helmet that has a colour scheme that you like better - i.e about 12 months :D

But - how about MotoGP racers. Surely they do not replace their lids every time they fall off. Think of how many crashes there are over a race weekend for all of the MotoGP and smaller bike classes - they would get through nearly as many helmets as tyres !

Mind you MotoGP racers mostly crash into slidey gravel and do not have to contend with crashing into the back of parked vans, because they were looking at a nice lady. If they did, perhaps they would change their helmets more often.

So there it is, the definitive answer :D

Oh yes they do. That is why you will see several helmets in the garage on a race weekend and why they have factory backing.

So why bother wasting your time with a response? Leave it there mate or you will only end up spitting your dummy and running again!

I did make the point about MotoGP racers crashing a lot - and did they need to replace their lids all the time ?

I thought the question was a bit - how long is a piece of string type of question - difficult to answer.

Lessons learned and all that ;)

How long is a piece of string?

It is twice as long as it is from the centre to one end
