    ....sherry ?

At one time, when I was about 12 years old - Christmas and Sherry went together, along with Asti Spumanti and probably Egg Nogg or whatever it was called (yellow stuff).

Now it is all different kinds of Gin or tasteless Vodka, that requires some POSH fizzy mixer to give it any taste. So you stand there, in the winter, with a glass full of ice cubes, some tasteless spirit, fizzy mixer and a straw.

Sherry is pure. They have been making it in Southern Spain since the Romans. Dry sherry is really nice, especially in winter.

But the problem is that it probably still has the image of Mrs Hyacynth Bucket (Buquet !) and all that middle class stuff.

Maybe it is just me - but is it all right to admit to liking sherry again, and ordering it in public ?

Yes, I say drink whatever you like. Personally I just stick to a good single malt and wine, not in the same glass of course.

I like Jack Daniels, Calvados and Cognac - without any mixers. I like the taste of the drinks themselves - the strong alcohol taste of spirits - although not very well up on Whiskey. But that idea of sipping strong neat spirits for their taste.

I thought Sherry could be a longer drink, which avoids having to put mixers in a drink. Sherry has its own classification, and there are probably sherry snobs out there ! - but it tastes nice so long as it is not too sweet.

Just going off the idea of mixers, Fever Tree, ice cubes, straws. But for some reason Sherry has some kind of social stigma :D

Good bottle of port, keep it chilled and drink it within weeks of opening, most peeps leave them open 2 or 3 years and drink at room temp. drinking it only at Christmas and wonder why it tastes weird.

    Sherry

    Bleurgh.....

    just Bleurgh...

And Ports just a fancier Bleurgh lol

Although in mitigation my views were probably shaped by the fact these used to be the only musty bottles of alcohol your parents used to squirrel away at the back of a cupboard that you could take a swig at before tottering down to the village disco....where everyone was glugging more cheap Sherry
I feel sick just remembering it :D

Never drank Sherry. When I did drink, I favored vodka. Haven't had a sip of any alcoholic beverage in ages. Probably 20 years now.

    Well done...:)

I've not had a drink for ages now and can't believe how much better all round I feel. Been drinking solidly since teenage years as you do . Tried many times to kick it in the head...but it was always a social thing & it was like being an alien being sober amongst my buddies.
Also fell into the... hey bad day, bottle of wine...hey great day...bottle of wine trap :(
But then all of a sudden one day I thought that's it...and I feel great. Tho it's still like being in a parallel universe on a night out lol :D

I spent some years doing the same, @Lozzy , my job then put me in places where alcohol was not allowed and I had to stop. Once I was back, the desire for it was gone and I never picked it back up.

Totally agree on the "I feel great" sentiment. I don't miss hangovers or the crap associated with getting shit faced.

Yep, even in 'modern times' there's still a culture that suggests there's something wrong with us by choosing mineral water etc, over alcohol.

I sometimes wish I drank so that I could experience the health benefits of giving up but I've been a sanctimonious teetotaller all my life. :D

Teetotallers Blahhhh, I would have to give up going to football if I was a teetotaller, there is no way you can watch West Ham sober, promise me, I have tried many times, and they are fecking worse than when I am pi**ed and watching them.

All you secret Lemonade drinkers ! :D

Same here really - hardly drink at all, but still like the taste of certain spirits, although a bottle can last several years !

It is really just the flavours, nothing that is going to interrupt the riding of the bike.

Given a choice of riding a CBR1000RR, and drinking - well that will be the bike please. Really not interested in drinking that will interfere with the bike riding. I would rather get up early in the summer, when the sun is up and virtually no traffic - and go for a spin, than lie in bed with a woozy head.

    Bike riding comes first ;)
