Am involved in a discussion on another forum about sidestands.

A budding professor of logic has posted that USA bikes have shorter sidestands because of the camber of the road, i.e. because they drive (and park) on the RHS the bike is leaning INTO the camber and therefore needs a short stand as opposed to ours leaning AWAY from the camber and needing a longer stand.

As one invariably ahead of the game, I pointed out that UK bikes (in general) are EURO bikes and most EURO bikes are ridden on the opposite side to us.

I am not sure about this, but I think manufacturers make the stand to suit 'level ground' which would seem to be logical.

I agree with you. @nigelrb . One way to solve this would be to get out the measuring tape and compare stands between a US model and a Euro model.

I will measure mine, then we can compare...and solve this mystery once and for all!

As an option, you could call in a special investigator:

I heard this guy is pretty good, though folks have a habit of dropping dead wherever he goes.

I have no problem about comparing lengths with you, but I think yours is a younger model. I guess our chassis are similar though;).

Mine is actually longer than I thought, coming in at a healthy 9 and a half inches (242mm approx) from its attachment (centre of mounting bolt) until it touches the floor. I've measured this similar to an 'inside leg' measurement; using the section of stand facing the rear wheel. A bit tight getting my hand into the appropriate place, but I completed the job with a smile!:)

I shall be sure to measure mine with the same procedure as you. 9-1/2" is a healthy example of a side stand.

Is the US tape measure the same as the UK one?

Here's me, posting in all serious as usual, about specific mechanical issues and someone has to front up with a damn penis joke.;)

I'm just glad that @Spygoat and I were not involved in discussions about the girth of our fuel tanks lest that too be fragmented into debauchery and innuendo. Such is the problem males have to deal with on a daily basis when anything regarding a tape measure seems to be an immediate euphemism for a schlong!

You can all count me out of this because I'll not be a part of it. Will make enquiries with the nearest Gender Reassignment Clinic so that next time I need to discuss mathematical calculae I shall not become embroiled in such frivolities. Sure, it's a drastic step, but I am willing to submit to this 'cutting edge' technology in the interest of maintaining the forum at the highest level of propriety.:D:D

I wonder how he thinks it's possible to get your left knee down on a UK track then?

Just managed to get 85" before it hit the ceiling and collapsed on the guy sitting opposite me who appeared to be watching you tube on his headphones rather than doing the work I pay him for. Right useful tool after all.

Never really considered sitting in the office measuring me todger with it either.

Over here, if it is assembled here, it can be branded as "made in the USA"

No you muppet, the 25’ length is designed to be measured around the average American gut, not trying to prove you put a man on the moon, and my measure was a £1 jobbie out of Wilkos, it could have been 85 or 75 or 150”, who cares if it’s accurate when it’s only a quid.

Plus if that Fatmax bad boy had hit my mate on his melon it would probably have brained him.

    Likely.

Though, I am glad I wasn't called fat this time. I will have to post naked (or at the very least, shirtless) pictures next time I'm called a fat American.
