Without meaning to rant, I've suffered my last price rise with Virgin Media. I've been with them for years, since the days of NTL World, but they still think it's ok to put the price up 3 times in the last 3 months and then finally overcharge me with no notification when my tie-in expired. I only noticed when I looked at the bill and it seemed a bit high, I guess they hoped it would fly under the radar!
To top it all when I rang to ask them to be serious about my bill, they thought it was ok to tell me that the £10 cheaper per month package available online is only for new customers and I therefore had to pay the higher rate. I took a breath at that point to stay calm and simply responded by asking him how that response made them look.

Anyway, long story short, they met me half way so I tied myself back in for 1 more year.
I would like to use that year to migrate all of my user accounts, banking etc to an online email address (or two).
Who should I go with? i.e. Google, who want to know your blood type...
Are there any things I need to be aware of? Such as which ones work on a Mac/iPhone.

Gmail and hotmail are the main 2 and i’ve been using numerous of each for donkeys years. For online email there are 2 types of mail delivery which is POP and imap. The difference is explained here:

    https://www.guidingtech.com/2207/difference-between-pop-and-imap/

If you use multiple devices then you want to go the imap route. For this I prefer gmail. It will work in any email client and has a good web interface when initially setting it up with options to import your email from other accounts so it comes into the one inbox.

As for working with apple devices yes they all will.

If you have any questions ask away.

I am the same about increases with virginmedia and I was with them from NTL 20 years ago:eek:
They put mine up every year, I ring them every year and then get a discount
That’s ok but why do I have to ring them every year
    Mine is
    100mg broadband
Unlimited calls to any phone all the time
Tv most channels apart from sky sport and films
I have got BT sports though
    £71
Don’t know if that is cheap
But what ever it is it pis### me off:mad::mad::mad:

Gmail is great. The apps are very slick and intuitive to use.
Plus you’ll get 15GB cloud storage.
You will be able to sync photos using the Photos app plus a ton of other cloud features all using the one mail account

I tend to use Outlook/Hotmail/Live over Gmail. I'm sure Microsoft will get as invasive as Google but for now I'm happy with them.

I also have my own domains and use them for email from trusted sources and when I want to keep stuff private. You could always look at something like Proton Mail if you want high security and privacy, and there are other out there offering a similar service.

my journey with ISP's started in the 90's. Claranet & NTL. The latter is gone but the former still operates (I think it is a business line only).
I switched to another ISP but pay claranet £10/ year and keep my original email address.
Had I not been able to do so, I would switch my main email to either google or hotmail (which indicently I have accounts with & use as back up). Both work on PC & I believe on apple too

BTW if you are an apple user, then you can use icloud mail.

I have a old blueyonder email through Virgin which isn’t very reliable now. I have been using an ICloud email now as my main email for a few years and I’m happy with it. Also have a couple of Google emails which work pretty well.

One other thing...when you want to download something, or need to register just to get info you can always use a throwaway email address. Just google it, I've used it for those annoying sites that wont show you a microfiche or parts diagram without an email address and confirmation code.
