    Hi all,

I have a deposit on a very low mileage 2018 SP2 that i am planning on collecting this Saturday but have just gone through forum and seen people having issues with gear selection either up or down shifting.

Is this a real issue on these bikes?

I have a 2012 20th anniversary that i’ve had from new and it has been faultless. I don’t want to change to a bike that has gearbox issues.

    Any help/advice would be welcomed.

    Thank you

I bet your 2012 is bought and paid for to, just like mine. I often have thoughts about chopping mine in for a new or newer one but then I see it pristine in my garage and just can’t part with it.

Yeah it is all paid for. I do love it, just want a newer one with a few more toys/upgrades on it. There is also the possibility of investment seeing as there aren’t that many worldwide but that is speculation at the moment as no one knows if values will go up like RC45 etc

Stuart - there's a number of threads covering this topic re 2017-9 SPs, but the long and the short of it is this:

    - Change tyre profile size or sprocket size and you MAY experience an issue with the electronics, including quickshifter. Equally you may not, recent info from @RC45 suggests many of the widespread problems have been due to the issue below...

    - Reflash the ECU with a different map (not usually done here but occasionally done by US owners who have a more restrictive OE map) and you will have issues.

    - Attempt to change down on the QS without fully closed throttle may result in missed change. (User error though essentially).

So that's it. I've got a 2019 SP and have had no issues to date with any false neutrals or anything else. So no, this isn't a real issue. What happened on the race bikes at the TT a couple of years ago was completely unrelated to the road bikes available now.

Thanks for the reply. It has helped put my mind at rest.
Basically then if i keep it standard which i intend to do it should be fine...

Hi Stuart. If it's the one at Hunts, it represents very good value. Having only just purchased a bike from Hunts I can heartily recommend their service and delivery.

Anyway, I have the 2018 SP2 and have had no problems whatsoever. I do not track it, but it does get a reasonable workout at times, both with manual gear change and via QS. As already stated, most who have experienced problems have been through changing the bike in some way.

I too believed they might hold a place as a future 'special' bike or investment, but the fact you can get many so cheap now coupled with the fact that there remain new 2017s and 2018s unsold both here and in USA, implies that in the short term you'd 'do your dough.' This is also evidenced by the price you are able to pick one up for now!

However, in all likelihood, it would hold value better than the 2012, and I'm sure you'd get as much or more enjoyment out of the newer model. The handling is magnificent, due in the main, to the Marchesinis.

I would go for it, but then again, there's not many I don't go for!!:)

    Thanks for this.
It isn’t from Hunts, it’s from Dobles. It isn’t advertised anymore since i put a deposit on it nearly two weeks ago. It’s a few hundred quid more than the one at Hunts but has less than 700 miles on it.
I think i’ll still go for it, i’m sure it’ll be fine.
Looking forward to seeing what the Ohlins feels like on the road, hopefully not too hard although i find the 2012 suspension quite hard. The SP2 is a racing bike so got to expect it to be quite stiff.
I know there are a few still about but they will sell eventually. The investment aspect isn’t going to happen overnight but in say 5 to 10 years time i wonder how many you’ll be able to find for sale.

    Cheers

I would stick with what you have if you are really happy with it, if it's toys your after why not fit a QS to what you have and save a few thousand £s in the process. The depreciation on the 2017/19 SPs is horrendous can you really see it becoming a collector machine in the future ?
Sorry to sound negative but I have been in a similar situation for the last 3 years about selling my 09 Repsol for something newer but then I see it in the garage and think no why would I want to sell, it's probably THE best bike I have ever had and she still looks stunning.

Can't beat new .....buy it....you may waste £££ but your smile will make up for it....we're only here once again I have had no issues with gear box....once you've picked it up let us know your thoughts....just leave it standard .

I hear what you’re saying and i do love my 2012 blade, makes me smile everytime i ride it. I did fit a quickshifter to it and only used it twice since fitting and it did make It a lot better, it’s just that i have always wanted a bike with all of the gizmo’s and the SP’s do look the part too. I did consider the SP but with good prices on the SP2 only a couple of grand more than SP’s secondhand i decided to go for the exclusivity too. If it becomes a future classic i may be quids in but if not then hopefully i would have enjoyed it.
    Cheers

That’s exactly what i’m thinking. If i have this one as long as i’ve had my 2012 and still feel the same i’ll be happy.
The only thing i want to do is fit a tail tidy. Don’t like the standard number plate holder....

Yep that's all I did .....did have a aftermarket can on order but cancelled it as only 2 bhp gain at 12k revs plus then heard all the faff with snatchy throttle response etc....the standard can sounds great once over 5k revs ..

    Yep, almost essential equipment!:D

Perhaps consider a rad guard also - if it doesn't already have one.;)

That is such a good looking bike.
Was going to get the Evotech tail tidy. Not a fan of R&G stuff really. Evotech one doesn’t need any wiring mods either, all plug and play.
A red hugger would be nice eventually but i think GB racing engine covers may be next,

Is there room anywhere under the seat to fit an alarm?

Nor am I when their logo becomes more prominent than the product!! Tail tidy is fine though.

Bloody hell, there's barely room for an insurance document and cleaning cloth! Can't even fit my dentures and condoms in there!!

I think you'd be struggling - depending on the alarm module size of course.

Be careful about the 'red' hugger. It might look too much! Just a tip;). (Go carbon or black.)

Aside from the number plate light contour, I'm struggling to see much difference.

Either way, they beat the atrocious decorated Sudanese schlong hanging out the back!!:)
