Floppy Mirrors?

    I'm a serial filterer and as part of this fold in my mirrors very frequently to get through tight spaces.
    It has got to the point that my mirrors are so loose they fold in on their own at any speed more than 30 mph! obviously not good for safety reasons.

    Anyway it is an easy fix!

    Just take the mirrors off, remove the screw on the under side.
    On the under side of the pivot you should see an inner ring (see picture). Using a pair of mole grips crush the flange down, (you will need to flex the cover that covers the pivot mount on the outer side to get a purchase with the grips) .You only need to do it in the places indicated. Just make sure the mole grips are pressing metal to metal, ie not the wire or plastics.
    Refit (don't over tighten - might crack fairing!) and enjoy nice tight mirror arms!

    Not sure how long the fix will last though, but better than limp mirrors!

    OK the fix reflanging the pivot pin is temporary, the flange will distort again returning you to floppy mirrors.

    For a permanent fix you will need to replace the pin with a hollow threaded tube like this one

    Steps
    remove the mirror
    remove the plastic mirror backing (this creates easy access to the top of pivot pin)
    Pull the indicator wires out of the pivot pin
    Drill out pivot pin flange from the base of the mirror
    Remove Pin (the washers may fall out so take a not of the orientation)
    Replace pivot pin with treaded tube
    Torque the bolts either side of the threaded tube until all play is removed but not too tight that you can not fold the mirrors.
    Lock the bolts in position (thread lock or distort the actual thread)
    Reroute the indicator wires through the tube ( you might find they no longer fint through so cutting the wires and resoldering may be necessary)

    Job done, like viagra for mirrors

    Cheers for the tips slick. Was commuting myself today and had to flip the mirrors in to squeeze through....

    Hello Slick. Registered on this forum just so I can reply to this thread!

    I was looking for a solution for floppy mirrors for a while now. Glad I came across this thread. Gonna give it a go myself!

    Good info- I've had this problem from excessive (?) filtering. So I stopped doing it ( usually) then some moron twatted my mirror while she was parked up and put a tiny hairline crack in the front cowl so if anyone has a 08 black front cowl - give me a shout please. Thanks GaryS

    No problem!

    The problem is corrosion in the spring washers, when they get seized up they do not act like springs so something has to give, the weakest point is the flange of the pivot pin, this distorts the flange causing excessive play

    Keep them washers ACFed to prevent this happening

    [​IMG] to be fair I broke my RH mirror at the base off the stem on the garage wall and gaffer taped it then it came loose and dropped between the fairing and brake lever when I turned the bars to the left! But FLOPPY MIRRORS AAARRRGGGG!!! :eek::D;)

    Glad to see you are on the fix!, After a drop last year broke my mirror too at the base but fixed it in place with gaffer tape, didn't realise the risk! Luckily nothing happened.

    I didn't realise the risk either mate till it was to late! It just goes to show the most innocent looking thing on a bike can spell disaster! But yeah cheers I'm on the mend and lesson learnt I'm taking nothing for granted in the future if something goes then neither does the bike ;)

    I was going try Slicks great idea about a new pin but then thought I'd give this a try. Put a nut and bolt through the original pin when cables removed, and tighten to your preferred spec. Gave it a lube also and seems like it might last longer than Slicks first attempt. Feels much better but only time will tell if I need the full pin replacement.
    If it fails, it will remind me to report back that it didn't work.

    I always pull my mirror in when filtering, mainly the right hand one, rarely both to get through tight traffic, so this will come in handy when I get old and floppy.... I mean, when my mirrors do...

    I keep my right mirror tucked in all the time on my commute but fold the left one in and out constantly.
    I'll have to try this next time they get loose. Definitely cheaper than £100 for a new mirror carcass.
