Yep, definitely "old School", I was taught to do the same on my first cars by my dad, who spent his life in the motor trade, primarily to prevent brake squeal, but on modern brake systems on bikes with anti-squeal shims it's not necessary and there is always the risk that grease can migrate onto critical components, get transferred by dirty hands etc.

Lol lovely bronze calipers, a benefit reserved for the C-abs owners club, a small consolation prize for putting up with a goofy system!

Piston and pads arrived today but no seals. Not like I'm in a rush though.

Ordered new seals too, took me all afternoon to take the calipers apart again due to the acf on the seals. Hopefully the rebuild will reduce the effort required to activate the piston

Got my seals next day from wemoto, the seal where all sliding fit on the piston. The old seals were a bit various, some tight some loose.

Only brake fluid and rubber grease used this time, and guess what less than 10 psi to activate the pistons!
